Bishop this weekend- best spots for cold weather climbing

Hey all,

I was planning to go to Bishop this weekend from Fri morning until Sunday, and have noticed the weather will be pretty cold. I have never been before, so looking for advice on best areas for cold weather. I know theres a lot of info on this site, but sometimes its easier to ask the question then spend hours sorting it out.

J-tree is another possible option otherwise if the weather will be too cold (I'm in SoCal)

I think ono of the more comfortable cold-weather camping options for Bishop would be the Creekside Inn.

If you chase the sun in ORG you'll be fine. Climbed there 2 weekends ago with highs in the low 50's. It was down right hot in the sun. Just bring a puffy for when you are in the shade. Better yet... Go ice climbing!

The Happy Boulders are the best place in Bishop to be during cold/stormy weather. It is lower elevation than the ORG and the Milks (+1 warmer), tends to be reasonably wind-sheltered (+2 warmer), has good options for sun (+3 warmer), and it is bouldering, which is generally more pleasant than sport climbing if it is really cold.

If it is really grim (i.e. snow), the Sads are an option too. There isn't as much sun as the Happies (due to the cave-like nature of a lot of the boulders), but this is irrelevant if it is cloudy/snowing. The caves offer good shelter from wind and precip during stormy weather.

The Milks offer sun, but are higher elevation and can often be windy. They are closer to the mountains too, and are more likely to get snow. Snow can shut down the Buttermilk road for a few days, depending on amount.

The ORG also has sunny options that are nice during cold weather, but it is still a narrow gorge; you lose the sun fairly early in the day. Also, the wind can really whip through the gorge. ORG will likely be too cold this weekend.

If you want to boulder in Bishop this weekend, Happies/Sads are you best bet. If you want to sport climb, skip Bishop and go to NJC.

Josh, I climb in the ORG all year round, its mostly always doable, but I have some limits as far as temps go.... if over 105 in B town don't go you will roast. If lower than 50 ..... you will freez your butt.

NJC will be cold also.... for this T-day weekend, Im staying at Home in beautiful Moorpark CA and day tripping to Santa Barbara , 64 on Friday...
and Malibu, Texas Canyon sat/sun.... sometimes it doesn't pay to go drive all over hells half acre.

Alright, alright, it will probably be too cold. I guess "cold" is pretty subjective.

It's not "too" cold. It's just cold.
