August is tricky. Most of the standard vactiony climbing areas, especially those along the Med, are going to be very hot and very full of Eurpopean tourists. Spain, South France, most of Italy, Greece...hot. Whether or not this is acceptable depends on your priorities (nice climbing weather vs. sunbathing on the beach weather). Going high up in the mountains would be much nicer. The Dolomites would be an intruiging choice, and/or various options in Austria and Switzerland.

As others have mentioned, Banff/Canmore would be perfect. Great summer weather, amazing scenery, lots of touristy options in the national parks on rest days, tons of climbing, etc. Not majorly international, but a great place to visit.

Swissland is not very crowed because expected to be very expensive. But for a nice anniversary trip, it's worth to save money before.
And, life is short and as we say in french, coffins have no pockets

If you're considering Austria I forgot that I also put up a page on Wilder Kaiser after my trip with logistics info and pics. There are a bunch of apartment style rentals in the area in addition to camping areas. There are a number of local grocery stores if you're on a budget or just a cheap ass like me :) I had a hard time with flaky Italian business hours when I was trying to restock for climbing. Not the case in Austria.

Bump for Finale Ligure

I was there in August for some work and got a chance to check out some local spots for beachside relaxation and there is TONS of climbing around. It's not all centralized, but my friend took me around and when I saw the guidebook it was a TOME.

+1 definitely if you can compromise on experiencing Med beaches and Euro tourists.
The Fairmount will be a nice splurge (maybe just for a couple of nights :))

I stayed at the Fairmont Lake Louise, Vancouver and Whistler. One of the best places I've stayed.. One of the most expensive too. If you have the coin it might change your life!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
