Thailand - Chiang Mai Area

Hello! I'm in Thailand from now until mid April. I'm teaching at a school and am about 5 hours from Chiang Mai by bus. Would love to come to Crazy Horse Buttress for a weekend soon. I'll lead 5.10s and follow 5.11s. Don't know how great my endurance is right now so the first few climbs may be a bit ugly : ) I left most my gear in the states but have a harness and shoes and would be willing to pitch in for rentals or whatnot.

Also, I have time off in early December and around New Years and would love to explore the climbing in the south if I can find partners!

I've been to both places you mention and would say to just go anyways if u dont find a partner, you can always hire a cheap guide the first day and meet people after that.

I plan on getting to Chiang Mai around the 21st or 22nd. I will try leading most anything. I just want to climb some good routes. I don't have an international number yet so the message board or PM would be the best way to get ahold of me.

Neb, somehow I think I may have missed your post. Richard, that's fantastic timing. To both of you, I'm hoping to get a ride to Chiang Mai Friday night for the weekend! It's the lantern festival. Want to Lantern party and night and climb during the day?! I'll follow anything and could stand to get used to falling again! Hope to see you next weekend!

Hi guys,
That sounds like a great plan. I can be reached via what's app. My number is +66 96-971-0798 I'll probably take the shuttle from the climbing shop on Sunday the 22nd to familiarize myself with the area. I hope to see you guys there.

I arrive in Bangkok the first week of December and I'm considering heading north to Crazy Horse via train rather than south to Krabi because Tonsai/Krabi looks like it could be a bit of a zoo in December. I'll have two ropes, 22 draws, and a climbing partner, but I'm always down to hang out and climb with new people. I can put up moderate 11s if the stars align, and she leads 10b-10c currently but gets better everyday.

Anyone here have experience in other parts of Thailand? Is southern Thailand as nuts as it sounds in 'peak season'?

Hey nick

I am right now in chiang mai searching for climbers to go to crazy horse. I was three weeks in chiang rai climbing and can recommend mae sai. I am quite new to the sport but really motivated. Send me a message if you want to meet up.

I was in Tonsai over Christmas 2012. Definitely go to Crazy Horse instead! Way better scene and far less polished.

Definitely going to check out the climbing in the south as well, but it looks like I'll be up north for December at least. Flying into Bangkok and then sorting out a trip north (probably flying).

Heads up tips on transit to Chiang Mai? The train sounds interesting...

PM me if you have any tips on what to do with a day or two in Bangkok... i'd say post up but I won't want to take things too off topic.

Thanks, I'll reach out to all you prospective partners again when I'm in country.

Hello all!

I'm planning on heading into Thailand on Dec 12-16ish for some climbing in Krabi or Tonsai? First time climbing in Thailand and not sure what to expect.

Weather report shows rain? Is climbing still possible or are these just normal tropical showers?

Thanks!

The destinations you are asking about are at the other end of the country.

Over the last month I've accumulated a decent amount of northern thailand beta. happy to post up to answer questions. I can confirm that rain is, in fact, rain and that it is pretty scarce in Chiang Mai/ Chiang Rai during the month of December. Climbing conditions have been great.

I've just returned from my Thailand trip and my only regret is that I didn't spend more time there. Best climbing trip of my life so far.

Nick - I didn't get up north, I just stayed in Railay/Tonsai area. Have you been to both? If so, how do they compare? Thanks Nick!

Hello! I'll be in Chiang Mai from Jan 12-16 or perhaps slightly longer if the climbing conditions are good! I've not left London yet so can bring ropes etc if needed. Anyone available then to head to crazy horse?

Hey Fenda,

I'll be able to climb the 13th to the 20th. PM me and we can figure something out. I'm just passing through, so I'll only have a harness and shoes.
