Hi-

I can't seem to find the Family/Montreat Wall on Mountain Project. Is it on there? It is referenced on the "Family Feud" page but I can't locate. It seems popular.

Generally speaking, Rumbling is a confusing place, with tons and tons of amazing rock, but it's spread far apart and can be discombobulating. I wish the Mountain Project page had a better way of organizing, such that you could orient yourself and figure out area-based info from left to right or something like that. Perhaps an overall topo. The alphabetical listing on the first page offers very little to get started.

Anyway, I love the Bald and I appreciate all the volunteer efforts of internet based climbing information. Need to buy the new guidebook soon.

Cheers,
Russ

I'm not sure if this is what you were mentioning, but Ground Up publishing has a guidebook for Rumbling Bald: here

I don't know if the info you need is in there, but I have the Cedar Rock guide from them and the topos are hand-drawn and hard to beat.

NC Selected climbs also has a section on Rumbling Bald but I have found that guide to be less than 100% reliable for more detailed information. Lots of stuff is left out for space reasons, and the topos are basic feature graphs.

The new guidebook is the answer. Selected Climbs does a horrible job with RB, and MP info is limited at best. In the new book the Family Wall is included in the section dedicated to Test Pilots area. It has both topos and route descriptions. We warmed up at Family Wall last year before hitting some harder routes at Test Pilots. Routes listed in the new book on Family Wall: Family Wall Corner, Dirty Jugs, Family Feud (sport), Family Sport (sport), Family Solo, Extended Family, and Trick or Feet. A couple other easier routes just left of there (right side of Test Pilots). The new book has really made RB a much more fun place to climb and saves a lot of bushwacking and searching for routes.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
