I wouldn't attribute the 120 rounds fired and missed to the nature of a gunfight - I'm sure it's not easy, but 120 sounds excessive. They probably hadn't hit the range since their annual qualification.

It's pretty simple. 1970 - 205 million, 2015 - 321 million. Maybe we aren't keeping pace with expected or projected estimates, but 115 million people? We'll be at double soon. What do you consider an explosion then? triple? Quadruple?

Also stats are just that. Stats. You say crime is on the decline, but I live in the real world. How much do you read about on a daily basis that is crime related? I never saw any of that stuff 20 years ago and I was reading the paper everyday. It's not limited to big cities anymore.

You didn't hear about that 20 years ago because 20 years ago, a day's worth of news was restricted to one newspaper, or at most 60 minutes of tv time, so producers/editors had to pick what was shown, and a lost of small stuff was dropped. Now there is no limit to how much news can be fed to you at once, so every little story is made available to you.

They are voted out democratically no? Isn't that's what supposed to happen here? Name a single occasion in the last 200 odd years when the US government was overthrown by a well armed militia, and I'm including the Civil War. Maybe but all governments are either toppled or decay/change into somehting else. I'll be keeping my weapons thank you very much. At least then I can fight for the side I choose instead of being conscripted or killed like a sheep.
