I have the opportunity to buy Black diamond's Absolute Mitt for $75, I would use it for belay stations and mountaineering in the lower 48 should I buy them or would they prove to warm (I have cold hands often). Another choice would be the mercury mitt for $50. I also have the MH hydra pro glove to use when climbing.
The mercury mitts have proved plenty warm for myself (and my girlfriend and several other partners) in the coldest areas of the lower 48 and beyond.
Just my experience though, I haven't used the absolute mitts and if you have very cold hands they may be better for you.

I have the mercury mitts and have used them down to -20 in the NE with no problem. They are so warm (and thus bulky/no dexterity) that I end up rarely using them and they stay in the pack for emergencies most of the time. Looking into switching to the RAB guide this coming season so I at least have something with more dexterity and more useful.
Uhh, buy em, try em, and if they're too warm, sell em for $100 and change. But they are probably warmer than most things you'll want to do in the lower 48. Edit - I do have the Mercury mitts, and they've been plenty warm. As said above, wouldn't mind something with a bit more dexterity.
