Rope Cleaning in a Dorm Room

Hey guys, I'm a freshman in college and my rope is getting pretty filthy and needs to be cleaned. There are communal showers and a small dorm room so I'm pretty limited on space for cleaning and letting it dry. Any tips or tricks would be much appreciated!

Laundromat front loading washer. Chain coil the rope. No soap, warm water, gentle cycle.

• MOST IMPORTANT*:

before you wash your rope, run the machine for a full hot water normal cycle to make sure you rinse out any bleach or other cleaning products from the machine.

For drying you can leave it chain coiled. Try to find a place to lay it out on a floor or drape it around your dorm room on whatever you can.

A lot of good can be had from just cold water and swishing it around by hand as well. Daisy chain it up and take it into the shower. Let the water hit it on all sides, swish it around, and let that nastiness go down the drain. Then lay down some towels in your room, set a chair on them and drape the rope over and around the chair and let it drip dry. It'll be fine. If anyone gives you shit tell them to fuck off. Then drop out of school and go climbing.

Hopefully will be climbing all of Thanksgiving break if the weather is nice! I'll try out the washing machine method! If my roommate can deal with my soaking tent set up in the room, hopefully he won't mind a 70m rope draped across the room!

5 gallon bucket soak and swirl works just fine as well. Hang in loops on a clothes drying rack. Salt, pepper to taste.

set up a clothesline from one end of the dormroom to the other on your side. assuming you share the room and split it down the middle. otherwise, well... clothesline at random angles

Best case scenario, if you are washing in the communal shower, it will smell of strange mix of foot fungus, bleach, and bodily fluids, as well as coating of herpes virus and genital warts. If you are doing the washing in large tub in your dorm room, it will smell of marijuana, beer, and vomit, and may be exposed to inappropriate burns, and chemical substances.

In addition, after you use this climbing rope on the climbing rocks for one or two days of bold flash after washing, it will immediately become blackened again with the filth of your karabiner and your shame upon falling on a difficult, bold yet enjoyable flash attempt.
