Looking for a partner for Thanksgiving weekend near Linville Gorge

Hey all,

My family and I are renting a cabin in the Linville Gorge area and I'm looking to do some climbing while down there. I'm interested in Rumbling Bald or Stone...or actually anything that's climbable this time of year.

I've got a full rack and rope and can lead up to 5.10. Friday (11/28) or Saturday(11/29) of that weekend (or perhaps both days) would be best.

Let me know if you're interested.

Any reason you are looking to climb at the Bald or Stone when your cabin is in Linville Gorge area? Linville itself has some of the best climbing in the east. Shortoff is great that time of year. North faces can be chilly but almost everything is climbable unless we get a really cold snap. If that is the case you are right that Stone and Bald would be warmest. Good luck and have fun. I can't join you but bet you will find a partner. I was up at Hawksbill today in the gorge and it was great.

Chris,

Good question. I guess I put out those areas because they would be the warmest, but I'd definitely be interested in Shortoff as well.

I was at Hawksbill a few years back. I backed off Lost in Space and regret it to this day.

Tommy,

I'm idle on Thanksgiving this year and would be looking to get out. I'm fairly flexible in the location. I do most of my climbing in the Gunks. I live in DC area now and would like to spend the break somewhere in the midatlantic which I've yet to explore and would likely see better weather. I lead 5.8 - 5.9 and can follow up to an 11a. If interested, drop a line.

TomH - I will be near DC (winchester, VA actually) visiting family over thanksgiving holiday and am also interested in doing some climbing in the area over the break. Looking to follow, up to low 5.10s (but happy on easier routes), on sport or trad. Let me know if interested.

I'd love to climb with you in the tilted world at shortoff. Sadly I sold my rack but I'll hike yours in to lighten the load and I'm game to swap leads with you/do pitches you'd rather not lead. I've been climbing in linville gorge many years but tilted world would be an onsight for me. Cool day would be tilted world (overhanging 10a) --> dopey duck (5.8 beautiful vert 3 pitches).

Hey all,

There are a bunch of posts up here now, so I just want to reaffirm my interest.

Andy, Dopey Duck and Tilted World do sound cool and I'd definitely be interested.

Tom H, we had talked initially and you had wanted to squeeze out a few days of outdoor stuff...how's that coming?

Janine, I'm not sure what days you are available/interested.

I can climb Friday (11/28) and maybe the Saturday, as well.

Hopefully, by next week, we will have a better idea of the weather. Then, we can figure out logistics.

[UPDATE] Sorry, I've been off the grid for a few days. I have committed to a group going to Red River Gorge. Would love to do Linville but going to RRG presents 4 days of climbing and low-cost cabin stay. Having said that, let me know if anyone is interested in tagging along to RRG. We've got a group of about 5 committed w/ a couple more 'maybes'. I can talk to the organizer about adding people. I get the impression 'the more, the merrier... and cheaper'.

Hey Tommy,

I'm glad I saw your post as I was just about to make one of my own on the same topic. I too am cabin-ing in NC for Thanksgiving week, but I'll be a little further north in Banner Elk. I'm going to be there Monday through Sunday and can probably climb either Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday. I'll also have access to a car and will be bringing my draws (~10), harness, and shoes. Maybe a boulder pad too but I don't have a rope. Where I'm staying is about 45 min north of Linville so if you're looking to climb around Linville I'm happy to meet up and offer a competent lead belay. I'm climbing right now about the same, 5.10 lead, 5.10/5.11 top rope. I'd really love to connect with someone if possible as the rest of my family doesn't climb and I live in MN so really hoping to do some climbing not in MN.

Lets connect

James,

Friday would definitely work for me. Let's keep an eye on the weather and solidify plans next week.
