Wear your orange/bright colors

there were a few hunters out around trailside boulders today shooting towards thd north seas boulders. They had blinds set up right behind the hiking trail BEHIND the hiking trail near the trail side boulders. It's hunting season so wear your bright colors and make some noise when hiking around. When they shot it nearly gave my wife a heart attack.

I always figure that any hunter drunk/dumb enought to shoot a hiker is not going to care if you are garish or not.

Garish is not a color

But it is the color of the bright showy thing to wear.

No it's not a color. It is an effective way to say "obtrusively bright and showy; lurid", with the use a one word. I'd offer to use smaller words but that would be difficult to do and still preserve my meaning.

I do stay away from popular places on opening day but I will not wear stupid colors just so some illiterate S.O.B. doesn't shoot me. Thanks for the advice though.

In some places it is illegal to not wear a certain amount of blaze orange in hunting areas during season (like RI), and you can get fined. I too hate having to wear stuff because others are unaware (those vests are surprisingly hot), but it is kind of stupid not to wear it. I usually hang them up right near were I am bouldering and be sure to make a little noise, but hiking around I have it on and something hanging off the top of my pad.

^OP Aren't you supposed to not hunt right near a trail?

I could change it to drunk asshole. But really what other reason could some asshat have for shooting a hiker other than being an idiot?

I never wrote garish means orange. I wrote the orange vest is what makes you the garish type. I also posted a link that shows people who don't wear orange vests as garish as they be are more likely to get shot.

But hey, don't wear those garish vests. They suck even if they might save your life. You tell everyone you were right and that hillbilly junkie illiterate hunter was wrong in the afterlife.

Umm, try to pay attention dude.

as powhound said upthread, "The concern is not that a hunter is going to shoot directly at you but that you might be in the line of fire behind their target. It can be extremely hard to see people who aren't wearing blaze orange (or some bright color) when hunting in the woods, especially when your focus is directed at your target. "

Also remember to brighten up your pooch too if you're out romping around. Blaze-orange collar or bandana, even a bell. As a hunter it shames me to admit that some douches, although a tiny percentage, will actually fire at a moving four-legged animal before identifying it. Some hunters have an itchy trigger finger for coyotes, as they kill plenty of domestic animals and livestock. so if your dog even slightly resembles one be sure to dress it in plenty of color.

I'm not a hunter but would imagine that hunting that close to a trail isn't permitted. I'll ask my friend who is an avid hunter. And yes It's not a blatant shot to a person but an accident where people could be climbing across the the pond that wouldn't be see without bright colors. Also where this hunter was a person could walk around from overlooked and be in the path of fire.

Realizing that some ignoramus with a rifle does have the larger argument in the fight, and my lack of garishness may get me shot, I will still not assume the responsibility for identifying someone else target. The guy with the trigger is responsible to know and apply the four rules. If he is to irresponsible to do that no amount of color, garish or not, is likely enough to save my life for me to change my behavior. As to who did or did not mean color I cannot say. All I can say is that that's not what you wrote. Add again that you don't get to choose other peoples words for them. It doesn't work that way. I said garish because I meant garish.

Ah, the grammar police. the last bastion of the real asshats. I just reread what I wrote. If you want to get your english teacher in my face go ahead it won't make your or me right or wrong. I am not going to wear a vest. If you shoot me it's your fault. End of topic for me.

In New Hampshire, it is illegal to discharge a firearm within 150 feet from a trail or 300 feet from any "developed recreation area".

Do not assume you're safe on a trail though. If a hunter is walking around and unfamiliar with the area he may not know there's a trail close by and in the direction of his shot.

I just don't understand why hunters would even bother being that close to commonly used areas, but hey it's always happened and it seems it always will.

Be aware of your local hunting regs and don't be an idiot. wear brights and make noise.

This is false, especially if you're stubbornly wearing brown or "earth tones".

You guys are fun..ny.

YUR GUNNA DIE!

f'n post limit.

I think my claims are self-evident.

I am not going to change my behavior.

If you shoot an unarmed hiker it's your fault 100%.

Orange is a color.

Garish is an adjective.

I can be right all day long and still end up dead.

All shooters are required to know and apply the four rules.

Shooters who fail to do so are ignorant at the very least.

A couple of typos changes nothing.

I'm trying real hard to find an unsupported claim and am having trouble.

And yes I do frequently wear all black and sometimes, gasp, with a hoodie, in the woods.

Don't Shoot!
There's just something about a 7mm round through the guts that I find unappealing.

Even still I believe Jeremy would walk in the woods wearing black soft shell pants and jacket and his hood up.
