I had no idea what you were talking about so i googled it

youtube.com/watch?v=_El020B…

I used to only coil my ropes that way all the time, but not so much anymore

The advantage of coiling that way is the rope does not need to be reflaked at the base of the climb because it stacks the rope nicely so you have one end on bottom and one end on top.

Same technique here. It's still a butterfly coil just done differently. I've tried it a few times but found it's easier for me to grab the center of the rope and do a regular butterfly rather than flaking it and grabbing one end. To each his own...

In Kansas City the climbing club hosts a rope coiling contest and the wild math that is not used it's similar but you use both hands alternating back-and-forth over your neck and at the end you're left with the same results without all the confusion of left and right and flipping the switch that over your hand and neck.

Pardon the voice to text.

The prize for the coiling contest is a brand-new rope so you can have 20 people chip in 10 bucks scale to however many you have and you'll never have a funnier time in your life watching people compete. You will also be amazed at how fast the winner coils a rope.

Never heard of that method, I coil my rope using the magicless wowless way:

That said, it would be fun to have rope coiling contest and see which is faster.

Starting at the half way point is a recipe for disaster. The left hand, flip over head, to right hand, flip over head to repeat to tail, standard method, creates a simple figure 8 over the neck, which eliminates twisting of the rope, which eliminates bunching at the belay device as you feed rope. Now that thur is a run on sentence.

Watch the above video, but start with a single end hanging to your feet. Wrap over your head in the same motion from each side as she does until you come to near the end, then finish in the twister nose or backpack as needed.

The competition cannot have more than an arm length of rope on either end, so an early finish and extra few inches makes for added hilarity.

Disaster? It's coiling a rope, what's the worst that could happen? I've always started at the half way point when doing a pack coil, never had any issues with tangled rope.
So with the magic WoW you are basically doing a pack coil but can't use it as a pack because you only have one strand at the finish. Not seeing any benefit to the Sham Wow.

I always use the magic method but start with enough hanging to make a backpackers coil. Its also easy to do starting from the middle. I dont think about it as right left. I place my left palm flat. When i go down from my neck i cross to the other side of my hand. Coming back up i go on the same side. Once a rhythm is established you dont have to think about it and can carry on a conversation.
Even if you mess up it doesnt destroy your coil, it just doesnt split at the bottom.

This "wow" method is the standard way for many of us.

Advantages:
1. less effort than flapping your arms like a butterfly, as you never lift the weight of the coil. Especially for the less strong or those with an historic shoulder injury.
2. easier to make the coils very short (you just bend your static arm) - short coils are best if climbing with the rope on your back.
3. you don't have to separate the mess of double ropes out first at the top of the route before you coil, you just take one rope each. You just each take the end of one rope from the second's harness.
4. you never have to pull the rope through at the base of the route.

Where is gets transformative compared to starting in the middle is when having to rap into hanging belays (e.g. sea cliffs) to start a route. Here you have no possibility of easily pulling the ropes through at the start of the route, especially if you have double ropes.

there is of course a full set of images of the method on mutipitchclimbing.com including the important bit of separating the ends out very carefully when you take it off your back.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
