Oak Flat/Queen Cr.

Pres. Obama vetoed the NDAA military spending bill yesterday, which was McCain's vehicle for giving away Queen Cr. to mining interests. So, maybe it's not over till it's over? I don't know how the Apache will respond but maybe there's a chance to see this rider dropped from what will ultimately pass Congress and the While House. Worth looking at.

More breathing room for sure. The bill must pass in another form and it may once again have the Oak Flat giveaway attached at that time.

The battle will not go away. Too much dinero invested by RCM. We have to keep at it.

You seem to have been involved with most things "Arizonan" for a while... are local climbers or climber groups taking any steps here? Calling politicians, shaking it up, getting some voices raised? Anyone calling the Access Fund for their input? Now's the time... indeed, Resolution isn't going away. We shouldn't, either.

Thank you for your concern. We have local climbers involved intimately with the Access Fund and the Apache, among other user groups. Generally it has fallen on the Apache to lead the way. They are still occupying Oak Flat Campground. The CCG (Concerned Climbers of AZ) are the tip of the spear for local climbers on fighting the swap.

Facebook has a good group with timely information. We use this forum occasionally but it falls apart quickly with side notes. I can steer you to them if you wish to help.

We do encourage all to participate and if you search this and other sites you will find calls to action, which generally seem to fall loudest on local ears. Glad to have your support.

If you find yourself in AZ, hit me up and if it's winter, we'll head to Oak Flat.

Thanks, and do point me to any groups working on this... and I'll do some sleuthing with the pointers you've provided, and keep myself up to speed. I would like to help wherever it is possible.
I knew the Apache were not laying down their arms, metaphorically speaking, and we work for the same outcome, if for different reasons. I am not at all sure how the NDAA bill will be advanced, but it's sure not dead forever. Gotta have those bombs.
Always interesting. I was surprised by how little interest my initial post generated here, and over at Supertopo. Kinda unaware, more heated topics were available, I guess. Have a good day and indeed, i'be privileged to tie in with you sometime down there in the desert. Could happen...

Another reason Bernie Sanders is the man and McCain sux balls- prnewswire.com/news-release…

"San Carlos Apache Tribal Chairman praised today's introduction of the Save Oak Flat Act, S. 2242, in the Senate by Senators Bernie Sanders (VT) and Tammy Baldwin (WI). "I applaud Senator Sanders and Senator Baldwin for introducing the Save Oak Flat Act in the Senate and for taking a stand in support of Indian country. The Save Oak Flat Act will not only correct an injustice against the Apache and other Native Americans but also against the American people."

The Save Oak Flat Act would repeal Section 3003, the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange Act, of the FY 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would transfer Oak Flat, a sacred area of Apaches and other Native Americans located in the Tonto National Forest, to a private foreign-owned mining company resulting in the destruction of this sacred area. The Save Oak Flat Act would immediately halt this transfer and restore the federal protections for this sacred area. "
