Hi There, I want to get into alpine this winter. What are some good beginner objectives/summits in PNW? Also looking for a mentor / group to learn with. I bring to the table a car, full trad rack, gas money, or beer? I'm in the Portland area.

Cheers,
Tim

mount hood south side, (snow)

the tooth snoqualmie (rock)

elliot glacier ice flow, mt. hood (ice)

illumination rock, south chamber, (mixed climbing conditions, danger and adventure)

The Mazamas group can be pretty silly, but they do teach you how to be safe pretty well, and there are some good climbers once you get through the first few courses.

If you have some money, the American Alpine Institute (Bellingham) has a great two-week course that will teach you the basics for self-sufficiency on glacial climbs. From there you could look to get into trad and ice leading, perhaps under the tutelage of some mentors you'd find now that you have a base of skills?

EDIT: seems like you would only need the first week given the second week is all rock.

Have you done much ice climbing? Triple Couloirs on Dragontail was my first real alpine route.

Should say I have no ice climbing experience, even after living in Quebec for three years :(

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
