I pine for the day #6 cracks are either bolted or filled in with cement to prevent these tragedies. Sigh......

We used to do those kind of climbs with a #10 hex.
You could always get those suckers out.

There is no possible configuration of a #11 chouinard hexcentric that will span a crack that just barely fits a fully retracted #6 friend.

Duh...

My point to the noobs is that the largest pro for OW back then was a #10 hex.
You had to suck it up and go.

This was before the #11 and tubes came out.

Thanks for fluffing yourself up there.
Any non-insulting contributions, or do you just feel the need to shit on anybody who started climbing after the Carter administration?

More fiber helps with that

He probably walked 5 miles uphill to school in both directions, in the snow.

Actually, and i think Mr. Bald will not try and defend this thread, and putting my nose in where it really does not belong, if you have ever climbed some of his FA's, and think about what he was protecting with, the man is...BOLD. I guess those of us who have attempted to follow is his footsteps would call him John Bold!
Anywho, he is not a snarf, i think he was just saying. And i carry 2- #6's where he carried a #10 hex. Just saying. And i think it probably goes back to Nixon! HA!

thanks for all the discussion.
Im a pussy. whatever.... I just want to know if the person who pulled my cam before I got a chance to go back and get it.... wanted to return it....
the worst part is it was not even needed for the climb... but i took it with me and placed it because I don't get the opportunities that often... whoopidydooo.....

I don't doubt that he knows what he's talking about. I just find it at best mean-spirited to say (in essence) "you're a n00b for using, let alone being unable to retrieve, equipment that's been standard in the sport for more than 2 decades". At worst, it's elitist flaming of some dude who swallowed his pride enough to admit a mistake, but still had faith in the innate goodness of the climbing community. You sure showed him John! goingUp won't make that mistake again.

I specifically said "chouinard" hex because I know how long my #11 is, but I can't speak to the size of the current black diamond hex. My #11 was purchased sometime in the mid 80s.

Mehh... I woulda been more impressed if he had used chockstones he carried up in his canvas knapsack on his back, because you know...the idea of a rack wasn't even thought of yet ;)

I'm loving this thread. I hope you get your #6 back.

Oh man, newbs and their hex's..... back in my day we used to have to carry a boulder up with us to stuff in the crack and sling. fucking NEWBS!

DOH! someone beat me to it already, although a little more eloquently.

All this penis swinging aside, I am a little confused on the timeline. You get your #6 "stuck", and before you can get back to retrieve it is gone. How long was this time span? Most routes in the city are single pitch so didn't you go right back and get it? Did someone see you get it stuck and snake you?

The MP community can be so sensitive.

things ive learned from this thread.
john bold can climb a rout using only his testicles as pro, shove em in the crack and hang for a rest... worst case scenario you take a 20 footer on those saggy bean bags...
If you started climbing after 1978 your a noob.
If you've ever made a mistake climbing your a noob.
A #11 hex is a number 4 cam.
If you use either your a pussy noob... everything over fist sized should be free-soloed. or led only using john balds balls as pro
the MP community is still, or even more sensitive than ever.

In reply to ashort.. did you find a #6 last week in the city? no? then don't worry about it.
