Anyone heard anything on new tools recently? Other than the X-dream alpine and the two new grivel carbon tools...

The Viper is being updated soon. Looked like a non-hydroformed shaft with one of those fashionable sliding triggers.

I was able to handle the new vipers. From what I understand, they still are hydroformed. Looks like they use the same picks but the old hammer and adze options will not fit on the new tools (this is all from what I saw when checking them out) I guess its possible that they will change that but seems unlikely.

I haven't seen anything new for ice tools this year. I'm still really liking my Cassin X-All Mountain for ice, but picking up some X-dreams for mixed. I don't know if Petzl feels like their tools are still top of the game, but I'm surprised we haven't seen anything new from them for this year. It's been a few years since their big updates.

Black Diamond redesigned or rebranded their pick line up for this year: Ice pick, Ice+ pick, and Mixed pick which appear to be the Laser pick, Fusion ice pick, and Fusion pick.

Hard to tell if they actually updated them.

If they did then the Fuel tools could be really awesome. I demoed them last year and thought that everything about them was great except the difficulty in cleaning them. They stuck too well. Hard to clean sometimes without a big jerk. A redesigned pick would fix the issue.

For the record, Kong's website says their Soul tools get a CEN Type II rating:

Still look weird though

I wonder if they're using better steel these days - BD picks break like a mother.

Petzl released 2 brand new ice axes just a couple weeks ago. But they are straight-shafted aluminum axes aimed at the ultralight ski-mountaineering demographic.

The new PUR'ICE Pick

I prefer a sticky tool than one that easily pops out (AKA DMM Switch)! You can easily modify a pick to stick less but modifying a pick to stick more is a pretty hard feat.

Yup, imagine Grivel or Petzl steel for those picks?

Gives better penetration.. That's what she said!! It's about time Petzl came out with a pick you have to take a file to for half an hour.

You really looking for a pick that sticks more? I find that the way tools are designed these days it's hard to have a tool pop on you. Do you experience something different? I'm confortable on WI4 but conditions have to be hero for me to do grade 5. Is it a grade thing?

I know, I filed my Quark picks to match the X-All Mountain, took a while but the results are amazing (and last longer than the Cassin's!)

The only tool I have that I will not pull outwards on when placed in ice is the DMM Switch, unless it's buried to the head with the top notches gripping the ice.
It's an amazing tool once you know how it behaves, never any struggling, just lots of hooking moves and reserving your stamina for where it counts.

Where did you get carbon from? These are aluminum shafts.

Huh.. I would like to check those tools out. Although if I'm pulling outward on a tool, even with new designs, things are going wrong and shit's about to get real. Haha..

I would like a mixed tool that you could pull outward and not end up hanging in space checking for punctures.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
