Aka Nuevo

This area is comprised of light vegetation that can be slightly bothersome to navigate, but is not much of a hassle. There is much potential here for first ascents, but the better problems have been established. The rock quality on established routes is solid with great texture, but for your FA you might have to deal with some choss, so bring a wire brush. As for the climbing, many of the established routes are going to be on large, slabby egg-shaped boulders, so bring lots of pads and spotters or just top rope many of the highball projects.

Juniper Flats has a remote feel, but there is a lot of local traffic and abuse with illegal dumping, graffiti, and 4wd misuse. Be watchful for bees and the occasional rattlesnake. This area is good to climb year round, but I'd avoid the middle of the day during the summer months.

Getting There Suggest change

Head north from hwy 74 on Briggs rd at the heritage high school intersection. Pass mountain road, as soon. As the rd curves a sharp left onto Gunrther Rd,make an immediate right at McIntrye Rd (through the gate). Once you come to the church you will see a hillside directly behind it with a few rocks with crosses on them and very big power lines. Some of the main established climbing is at the top of this hill directly underneath the powerlines. To get there, you will take a sharp left just before the church on your right hand side. Fallow this road up and around for about 5-10 minutes to your main right keeping in mind that you will be trying to get to the powerlines and you will be at the main climbing area. Once you've come to a 4 way intersection, there will be a fenced property on your right hand side. Much of the climbing is on the other side of this property. Stay to your main right and you'll hit the high voltage area. 4wd/Awd is recommend. There are other areas in the flats with multiple axis points but that should get you started. You can go right when you come to the church and head up hill and it connects you to the same area because McIntrye Rd goes in a circle, but we try to avoid any from the church even knowing were there by going to the left.
