Pretty sure he pulled a piece?

Same thread going on over at ST. The conclusion there was there is a piece of gear that pulled and that was the cause for the long fall. Can't see it personally, but then again I haven't tried to zoom in and look for it.

You would have punched the belayer in the face for keeping your ass off the deck after ripping a piece out.....

hmmmmmmmm

The leader had piece of gear next to their right foot that came out. One can see the rope change direction as they move up (18-19 seconds). The next piece down that appeared to hold was approximately eight feet below. So the leader had about 11 feet of rope out. Thus a 22 foot fall plus rope stretch of a 2-3 feet, plus he pulled the belayer up 2-3 feet. So all told not a bad belayer but one lucky boy.

This was "Weekend Whipper" on Rock And Ice.
Here is what was written

Matthew Rhodin tells Rock and Ice. His friend, John, was climbing Naked Truth (5.9) at Eagle Falls in upstate New York. John lost his grip, shot earth-bound, and when his top piece of protection—a cam placed behind "the only flake available for pro"—blew, he really went for a ride.

When asked if he was good, John responded with an epic war cry—he was all right.

"The cam he had placed most likely pulled due to wet conditions," Rhodin explains. "Really happy he was ok!"

Nah, that only applies if the belayer actually pulled the piece of gear out himself. This looked like fine belaying to me. :)

It really feels like the OP was trolling, but it could be just honest noob gym climber mentality... idk...

I thought he must be trolling until I saw the gym pics. Then it all made sense.

You should take it a step further...... I don't always fall off 5.9, but when I do I make sure to pitch off at the top of the route and pull some gear making sure I come within 2' of the ground.

Holleeee shit that guy is lucky.

I have climbed eagle falls and the rock there isn't the best for pro in the first place it's kinda fragile. Glad everyone is ok and this happened the weekend after I was there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
