I go to school at Texas Tech in Lubbock, and it seems like there practically nothing to climb for hundreds of miles. I've gone to Palo Duro, but without any sort of guide besides mountain project. We wandered around for around 2 hours and didnt find any named boulders as far as I could tell. I did manage to find a fairly decent vertical face, but it was rather short, and aside from that didnt find any other good climbs. What are the best places I can climb without having to drive more than 3 or so hours?

Hopefully someone else has better insight but I had no luck while I was there for 2 years. The good news is that you are only 5-6 hours from weekend trips to truly amazing places in all directions like El Rito NM or Hueco Tanks in El Paso TX or Reimers Ranch in Austin TX. I guess its a sort of trade off.
Just a note on Palo Duro: There are some good problems but they are spread out quite a bit. They used to have a guide at the local climbing gym in Amarillo put together by some locals you could look into. That would be your best bet as descriptions and GPS coordinates are going to give you the best chance to find what you are looking for. Still expect a hike to and between boulders.

Hi there. I am an OPC (outdoor pursuit center) alum... We guided trips to last chance canyon in NM (4-5 hours away), not sure if they are still doing this but look into it. No guidebook for this area. As another poster commented Hueco Tanks is also same distance and if bouldering is your game it cant be beat. While far, if you carpool the gas is cheap split 4 ways. We had to do this for the four years I was there... We also did some sport climbing around Carlsbad and multi pitch around Taos.

Obviously the climbing wall at TTI is available for free if student and I used to hit the bath house at a tech terrace park (actual park name escapes me) that we used to traverse for hours when we were bored with the climbing wall...

Good luck!

Yo, I am a local here at Palo Duro and wouldn't mind giving you more details on the place. It's quite hard to navigate because of the terrain and the massive amounts of chossy rock. Besides the places that have already been mentioned in this thread, there are new areas being developed in
New Mexico, namely Roy and La Madera, but they as well, are hard to navigate.

First off, thanks for all the help everyone.
Ryan thanks for the El Rito suggestion, hadn't heard of that, I'll look into it.
Collin I will definitely look into last chance, thanks. And whats the deal with the bath house? Was there just a stone wall of some sort you could traverse, or was it an actual rock wall? It sounds interesting.
ATipton, is there any advice you can give me on navigating the boulder gardens? I have the MP app and all the route info downloaded, but even then I wandered around the area for at least an hour without finding anything.

A big percentage of the good rock at the Gardens is not more than 200 yards north of the road and starting trails, after that the climbable boulders are more spread out. I guess the biggest concentration at the front begins at the smaller parking area, west of the Rock Garden Trail parking. 100 yards North of this parking area is Johnny, Easy Traverse, Short Stuff, The Dungeon, CFB, Grit Block and Oreo. GPS and Google Earth help as well.

We can carpool to E-rock, Reimers, Wichitas, other places of interest, I have had a heck of a time finding a partner out here, I'm in Snyder.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
