Jack Kelly, wow -- Is there a hose running up to the top of that thing??

Hey, question for anyone who has built an outdoor wall.

The biggest decking posts I can find are 12 feet. Is burying them 2 feet in the ground, in concrete, enough???

I guess somewhat similar to gowser, but I was thinking more of creating a platform with vertical side supports, not with the second ladder and supports jetting out.

You might want to provide some more details and seek local professional advice. Geometry? "Biggest decking posts"? 8x8s? Damn those would be overkill.

Verify frost depth with your local building code, in Minnesota it's 42" or 60". In which case you should probably consider a free standing setup.

If you're intent on installing in the earth you might also be required to file a building permit with your local municipality.

I can't seem to find the picture of the set up I made in our backyard.
I had put a hose about 40ft up in a tree and left it spraying mist all night. Froze up nicely.

Yes, I wove a soaker hose and small sprinkler through the chain link at the top where there is a 2" x 8" which is bolted to the tree.

Indeed it is. There's a sweet spot time-wise, in between the bark falling off and the tree falling down.

See this photo of a massive, dead white oak in my back woods. And yes, he's LEADING.

Made this last winter in Nashville with a hose and two tower sections.

gunkiemike-- Great photo!!!! Actually placed screws? That is so freaking cool. Talk about great practice, too. And the dead tree is no worse for the wear. Everyone wins! Finding the right tree is the hard part, though.

Why not just go rock climbing? You get way stronger, better footwork, & when you do get on a pair a tools, it feels so easy compared to climbing with just your hands & feet.

I am rock climbing, just wanting to get some quick sessions in the backyard this winter...

Backyard woodie' climbing wall where we exchanged rock holds for two inch thick dense foam squares that take cramps and tools. ( pink sprayed white blocks made from archery targets) and a thick hanging swinging archery target bag for overhang.  Plus some dry tooling on holds we didnt' mind beating up on.   Then when cold enough, we used a portable rock climbing tower with autobelays that we froze up with ice to climb on,  until local temps melt us out by late Jan. Tough life for ice climbers in midwest !  Either this or a 10+ hour drive up north to da' UP or Superior ice.

Do you by chance still have the detailed plans for your wall? Looking to build one this fall.

Hey Jenna:    I just checked in a few days ago, first in many months.  Sent a message to you.   Since you are less than an hour away,  you could come over and check out my wall and photo, get ideas, tips and diagram what you might have in mind to build this fall.  Message back soon....as today has surprise sunshine but  forecast is serious non stop rain for 5 days in a row right now.   Woodchuck ATC
