Just recently moved to Portland and I have a good climbing partner moving out here in the middle of October as well.

Would appreciate any recommendations on cool cheap places to rent and local places to climb, especially if anyone has 2 bedrooms available in a house. Would love to live with fellow climbers!!

Thanks ahead of time!

Cheers,
Jake

Was at the Circuit in Tigard the other day and there was a posting for a room in a house that sounded super fun and chill. I'm sure you could call them and get the number or just go in.

As far as local climbing goes, it's not the best but we have some fun micro crags. Carver has a small amount of high quality routes and a fair amount of mediocre bouldering (you need to fill out a waiver and pay a fee( carverclimbingclub.org/) before visiting. Rocky Butte is the closest area, unfortunately it is a total shit show of urban funk, with that said if I just keep looking up I have always really enjoyed the climbing there. Broughton Bluff has a lot of quality routes on quality rock. Ozone and Farside are both really cool places on the Washington side, and of course Beacon Rock is awesome. Klinger Springs and Pete's Pile are both really nice spots as well.

Don't expect the world when you visit these places and you will have a blast.

Once you get situated, get to Smith Rock. 3 hours away from Portland.

Thanks all, that information was great! Haven't checkout out the Circuit yet but Portland Rock Gym had some fun routes as well as that mean ring lock crack.

I'm definitely going to check out Beacon Rock as soon as I can, but Smith has got to be first on the list. (hopefully monday and tuesday) as long as I find a place.

  • Ryan, I am checking out a 3 bedroom house tomorrow, so if it works out, my and my roommate will need a third and would definitely enjoy having another climber around. I will let you know.

Cheers guys, thanks again!

I just moved away from Portland. I am a rock climber/ice/alpine and I found the area horrible except for Smith Rock. I suggest you climb in WA where there's real climbing. You are close to Canada for ice. I relocated to Salt Lake and I love it! Check out some of the areas near Mt Hood. If you have a partner you will be Ok. The MTB is ok if you don't mind the drive. The Kayaking is the best!
Good luck!
