I got on ice for my first time on Saturday. Really nice, plastic, glacier ice at around 4000' in the low 50s. You'd have to leave California to get it though.
It's possible the original assembly was done while the coating was not fully cured - giving a custom fit to the original pick. Then a new pick comes along and it's not the exact same fit. Good job getting an acceptable fit. Bad job to Grivel for ignoring you. Remember when you are grinding special steel alloys that you don't get them too hot, as this can affect their hardness and stiffness. I'm not sure what the coating is - perhaps epoxy, I don't know, but would it make sense to heat the coating in the fitment area and then clamp the pick into position? Sorry it's a hindsight comment.
Sure took more effort than I imagined to replace a pick. Grinding/filing off the "clenched bolt" threads then I managed to strip 2/3 of the allen wrench holes. More grinding to remove the bolt heads.
More grinding on the new pick similar to the OP to help the two surfaces mate.
The M5 3mm hex machine screws didn't excite me during the removal process so I bought replacement #10-24 x 1/2" stainless Phillips pan head machine screws. Also didn't "clench" a bolt as instructed, used little locktite instead. Much cleaner solution and easier to replace next time.
Definitely not a process one would do mid-road trip or sitting in a tent. Happy that Grivel simplified things with their new lineup.
