Eastern Iowa Bouldering

I'm going to check out bouldering at Joinerville Park and Prairie Creek this Sunday if anyone is interested in exploring the bouldering with me.

Having climbed a little bit near Maquoketa, I wouldn't expect much. Depending on how much time you have you might be better served by heading to Governor Dodge State Park in Wisconsin. Good luck either way!

It was worth the trip! I recommend checking out both areas, especially Joinerville!

This is good to hear. I will make a trip to Joinerville the next time I am out that way. V easy appeals to me.

Iowa is wide open for bouldering development. It's just gonna take a motivated boulderer to get out, explore the public land and start putting up first ascents. The eastern 1/3 of the state in the driftless zone has LOTS of high quality, pocketed limestone.

I'm constantly hiking past great looking boulders that are just waiting to be climbed on. It almost makes me wanna pick up a pad or two, but I'm more stoked on putting up sport routes.

Check out state and county-owned lands. Most of the places do not have regulations in place prohibiting bouldering.

Six years later...I'm moving to Iowa City. If anyone has interest in hunting for bouldering around Iowa, I'll be out there come May!
