Similar to the rack envy thread but regarding ice gear. Post pics of your tool lineups, screws and pons

But you only need one of those pairs, Zac. The pair in the middle.

I would most certainly take the quantum techs out over the nomics for pure ice, and the quantum race for mixed.

Love them.

Grivel has some master metallurgists working for them that puts all others to shame. They are light and fit my boots well. I'm almost exclusively G20/G22 combo.

Downside is they don't travel as conveniently. Most other crampons you can compact them a bit by sliding the forefoot down the connector bar, with the G20/22 you can't.

Do you like the G20s more than the Rambos? I would like to try out either the G20s and Rambo 4s to compare them to the Bladerunners.

Got All Mountains and those Petzl screws hanging around my house too.

Bill if you want a monopoint, I think you might enjoy the Rambo4 more than the G20. I'm only 185 lbs and if I'm climbing pure ice, I feel like I'm on roller skates with any typical monopoint crampon (Dart, Stinger, G20). Just too skinny, not enough purchase, subtle flex in the semi-rigid frame, etc. The major exception to that is the Rambo 4. Those things are built like a brick shithouse. IMO, it's the best pure ice (and moderate mixed) cragging crampon on the market today. No comparison. Absolute rigidity and precision. (I still prefer dual points though).

Rambos do have some downsides though... I think it falls short on pure dry tooling because the widely-splayed secondary points get in the way of precision toe work. It's also quite heavy for longer alpine routes. And the anti bots are somewhat fragile. When hiking around in early-season conditions with low/no snow coverage, rocks and sticks beat up those "bubbles" pretty badly in a way that normal flat anti-bots aren't affected.

Definitely one of my favorite tools. Ive got the 2014 version which has a slightly less aggressive pick angle than the v1's. When lined up with nomics they are still slightly more agressive but seem to have a much more natural feeling swing. Of course that varies with the individual but really can't speak highly enough about them.

That being said, If i could only have two sets of tools, it would be the grivel quantum race and the quantum techs... if I could only have one set of tool, it saddens me to say it would probably be the nomics.

Ditch everything and get the X-Dreams. Or the new Grivel Tech Machines.

I like my Raptors, but I'd like to try Quantum Races. Nomics and X Dreams both have huge followings for a reason, though. The Raptors are effectively shorter than Nomics when you have the mixed picks on them -- and I think there's more flex. Those are the gripes I've heard about the Raptors. (That and the first generation handles were too small. Second generation handles are bigger/better.)

This conversation is faint in my memory, remembering it from last season...

I remember picking up an X-Dream and chopping at the ice. The thing was like a drill bit, it just shredded up the ice. I remember talking to my climbing mentor about them and asking if they were good tools since it seemed reasonably easy to get good sticks. He told me that they stick in the ice easier than other tools, but they also blow easier than other tools. And I think he said the picks wear faster? (Something about the picks profile or it being narrower or smaller backteeth.... I can't remember)

Any of you X-dream fanatics have an opinion to throw on this? I don't like the curve on the x-dreams.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
