New "HUGE" climbing gym coming to Houston (Katy) Area!!!

Momentum Indoor Climbing recently finalized their land purchase in Katy, TX with target to open their new gym summer of 2016. For those not familiar with the area Katy is a suburb of Houston on the west side of town. This is incredibly exciting especially as I recently moved from Denver, CO to Katy, TX and have been quite saddened by the lack of climbing options (indoor or outdoor) as compared to being spoiled in Denver. I haven't climbed at a Momentum gym but by the looks of it they are a top notch place comparable to Movement or Earth Treks. I only have two requests: 1) Lots and LOTS of cracks, fingers to squeeze, you can't have too many cracks. 2) Open it sooner!!! You think I would have developed some patience sitting in Houston traffic for hours a day but alas I have not. If the designers would like some unwanted and questionable advice on wall design or route setting I have plenty to spare, just let me know! Anyway, psyched with anticipation! |

I hear that Mike! I'm in the same situation, moved from Denver 4 yrs ago and have been driving an hour to Inspire or 3 hrs to Austin. This new Momentum gym is going to be 15 min! Planning on being in there on day 1. |

Yet again, San Antonio brings up the rear... |

God willing, I too am hoping for some cracks. Or at least an assortment of sizes on a crack machine. |
Yeah, this new one will be over an hour drive for me. Guess I'll be sticking to my little hole in the wall gym here in League City. |
Anybody heard any updates on this? Is it still happening? |
I haven't heard any official update yet, but according to the cityofkaty website, the construction project may have started already as of 3/2016 . |
I think I drove by the construction site the other day, looked pretty empty... Anyone knows if this is going to be ready for the summer? |
From what you have stated in your post, it does not sound as though it will be. |
I emailed Momentum. Here is their response. Ugh. |
Thank you for the inside information, Superclimber. |
I also emailed the Baker Katz guys, and this is the reply from Ben Brown: |

Sad news as they originally targeted opening the Katy location this summer. |
A bouldering gym next to Fotofest!! In 11 months. That would be too good to be true. |

The good news is we are bringing two very large gyms to the area: a 40,000 square foot bouldering gym to the inner loop (2000 Edwards Street) and a large “full service gym” ropes and bouldering to Katy (behind the Nissan dealer at Katy Mills). The bad news is these projects have proved more difficult than we thought to get off the ground. At the moment my best estimate is that Katy will open 12 months from now. The Houston bouldering gym, 11 months from now. Once we get going on the construction we will have social media/web updates you can follow. In the meantime, feel free to ping me anytime with questions. Sincerely, Jeff"What email did you send to? Keep hearing rumors of San Antonio gym from them (we have ZERO real gyms!) but nothing has occurred here AT ALL. |

They have a few more details about the Katy gym on their website: |

In order to raise the bar of what we have come to expect at Momentum, this gym must have a wall so overhanging at you are actually climbing down (while inverted) for a portion of it. |

Matt - we are working hard to bring SA the modern climbing gym it deserves. I am a San Antonio native, but have spent many years away. I just moved back to SA to make this happen. My business partner is moving back to SA next month. Both of us are relocating our families, including spouses who are transitioning in their high level careers. We are fully committed to this gym, and have a lot riding on making it happen. |
