Coastal Carolina Climbing?

I will be moving to the Wilmington area at the end of the month and leaving behind my climbing partner and outdoor and indoor haunts. Much Google-ing of the area hasn't led to any convenient indoor or outdoor locations, especially since I'm not a student anywhere.

Is there information that my sub-par search engine use isn't finding or am I destined to drive a couple hours?

Any information is helpful!!

I grew up in upstate SC. The closest outdoor climbing (that I know of) is just west of Charlotte at Crowders Mtn. state park. It's not the greatest from what I've seen.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're in for some driving. There used to be a gym in Wilmington, but it closed I think last year. Closest rock is the Asheboro boulders, where access is provided by a lease by the Carolina Climbers Coalition - Info here

There is a gym in Fayetteville, probably the closest one to Wilmington. Triangle Rock Club. They also have 2 locations in Raleigh and there are several excellent areas around Winston Salem - Moore's Wall, Pilot Mountain and Sauratown (December-March).

just an idea here, but with all the gas money you would spend getting to the outdoor spots to climb you could probably build yourself a pretty decent bouldering wall, pretty sure I have seen plastic rocks for sale in the form here too.

I've climbed some live oaks out of desperation down near the NC coast before, they grow really oddly with cool shapes and the bark lends itself to nice edges and slopers, if you're creative you can devise some steep v2ish problems if you find the right trees. Tree bouldering is better than nothing I guess.

Yeah, but you have a good gym in Richmond.

Thanks jake and Jordan! I don't plan on giving it up, just gotta be a better planner! I'm psyched for places like Boone and Asheville.

Do you sail? It can be very adventurous. You can call for help but really there are no belays out there

We moved to Wilmington in January. There is no real climbing gym... There is a small one at UNCW, it sounds like the staff belays climbers based on our research. I must build a woody soon. Kayaking is fun. Flattest place I've ever lived!

PS marley, I'm a carpenter if you need help building a wall.

I live in Wilmington and am in the same situation. I don't climb very often which leads to short sessions when I get the chance, but I'm planning to build a woody hopefully this winter which should help. I also know of a little spot downtown I've been wanting to check out if anyone is interested.

I joined the CCC and got access to the Ashboro boulders. Anyone been there? Psyched on it since it's only 3 hours away.

I've been there once. Then I injured myself and had to leave, but the little I did was great! Lots of fun cracks, faces, and slopey geometric features to climb on, with good landings.

If you really, really want to do short routes some of the boulders up there are tall enough to justify a top-rope.

I live in the area and frequent spots like Moore's Wall and other locales on the weekends. Shoot me a PM if you're interested in coming along.

Nice to see several Wilmington people on this thread. I have a 12' x 10' woody in my yard, built this past spring for us as a wedding present from my brother in law. I used to boulder a lot when we still had a gym here, years ago, and am slowly trying to get back into it. I'd love to have some people over to climb on it, and also to give advice and ideas on how to improve the wall. As winter is getting started and most of my other hobbies will be slowing down I am also hoping to hit the gym in Jacksonville two or three times a month. We went recently and had a great time. Anyone interested feel free to message me, I could sure use the motivation!

Glad to see some others in the area. We should try to convince TRC to build their next gym down here, it would be awesome to have someplace local. I am definitely down for some climbing/bouldering trips if anyone is ever looking for a partner or someone to split gas with.

Going to bump this thread. I made the trip to Asheboro a couple weeks ago and had a blast. Let me know if anyone wants to take some day trips out there or anywhere else this winter.

Also, I'm getting some plans together for a bouldering wall that I'm going to build at my house so if anyone has holds, lumber or advice let me know. Or if you already have a woody that you don't want I would be interested in buying it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
