Sometime this winter, I'll be running a camping / climbing trip for some young people into southern New Mexico. From my research, it looks like we'll be climbing at the La Cueva area or the Pena Blanca. Most of the young people will be fairly new to climbing, but I have until then to get them ready. So, my questions are for locals, or anyone else familiar with the area; 1. Which climbing destination should I target if we only have a day to climb? 2. Is there anything that I should be aware of while there? 3. Are there some other local places (secret) that I should consider?
A little background; usually these winter trips were to the Cochise Stronghold, but due to funding & grant requirements, I can't take these young people out of NM. I figure the weather will be close to what we encounter at the Stronghold. Can't wait to check out the Organs.
You probably can't do better than the Cuevas... 'La Cueva', as it seems to be called now. The standard beginner route starts on the SW end, and goes nearly the full length, with a nifty rappel at the end of perhaps 60 feet. Roped climbing, but very easy. It was where we in the Southwestern Mountaineers would take beginners on their first club climb.
Thanks for the feedback. Looks like La Cueva is our climbing destination. I'm hoping to set anchors on some of the trad routes from the top, mostly because of time efficiency. The few sports route will be led. This trip is not just about the climbing, but more so for the belaying skill & technique. Trust building is a major component for these kids; they're high risk & under privilege. Both sides, the shady & sunny, look fun. Hope the weather cooperates then. Of course, we'll probably rappel too; good to bring up self control then.
