Dyneema slings: why does Black Diamond have this issue but no one else?

Black Diamond has stated that you cannot resling their cams with Dyneema slings as it will seriously pinch and cut the maincable. That got me to thinking, why do Camalots have this issue but no other cam does? The maincable is almost identical on the new WC Helium Friends, the Aliens (new and old), Totem Basics, Master Cams, TCUs, and a dozen other cams. All of them use Dyneema slings and all of them have maincable assemblies that are almost identical to the Camalots. So why arnt any of the other companies having this problem?

It's not that the other companies don't have the same issues, it's that BD made different design decisions with the C4s vs the other sling options.

BD specifically discusses the deformation in their blog post stating that double layer webbing makes them more resistant to cable tweaking in addition to making them slightly stronger (14kN C4 vs 12kN Friend or 10kN Mastercam).

I suspect the other brands cables are just as "tweakable" but not a major issue as it's rare for people to truly whip on their cams. I'm sure there are pics out there are moderately tweaked thumb loops.

Cables

It appears that the strands to wrap the wire rope are a bit different from one another in the above photo.

The way the strands are constructed and wrapped around the core can give the cables different characteristics. Some wire rope can be constructed to give a much more flexible and forgiving attribute.

I'm not familiar with the BD construction though, so maybe someone else has better knowledge on this.

Yeah, that is a bit odd, it appears that the kinked photo has a 1x19 cable whereas the non-kinked photo has a 7x7 or 7x19 cable (can't tell between the two from the photo). The funny part about this is that a 1x19 cable is much less flexible and much more prone to kink than either a 7x7 or a 7x19, so you would expect similar results even with the same type of sling.

The new BD camalots are nor dynemma due to a different cable method or lack of cable now.

I have cam sling frustration as well. I wish there safe way to have double length slings on the black diamonds as well. You would think that it would be as simple as adding a small plastic piece that would prevent the thumb loop from kinking.

I carry doubles of the dragons and I want to have them re-slung. But god dam if I send them to DMM I believe its like $18 per cam :O. (Plus shipping) Cant find a company that does it in the states here.

I even emailed

mtntools.com/cat/rclimb/cam…

and they don't do the smaller slings on the dragons.

WC and Metolius bar tack their dyneema slings near the cam, so I believe it won't twist like that. The example Camalot with a resling is an open loop.

Do it yourself with tech cord. It may not be all pretty, but it will save you the money and time spent sending them off.

Bigfeet - I thought of that, but it wouldn't look as clean.

cable around the thumb loop on the C4 is simply thinner than other comparable cams, since it's doubled over around the stem & terminated at the head. Other cams (including the X4) use the same gauge cable thru out so it's less of an issue. Not extra BD safety margin at work here...
