TRAVEL CHANNEL SHOOT -- 9/17

Creative talent?

Television stations interview people every day and don't pay them. It's called the news. Much like 99% of the Travel Channel programs. You want to be paid? Go audition first, prove your worth the cost. Fact is, Andy McKeown is likely to have several qualified volunteers that won't so materialistic. Satisfied with the attention and exposure that national coverage provides. A sponsored climber wouldn't ask for compensation, as they know the value that exposure give them and or their brands.

I'd show up if I was in the region. I'd even go and volunteer to be a grip, shoot B-roll footage, whatever for the experience. Just on the off chance they like my work and invite me to join them as a paid member for their next project.

Also, have you seen the Travel Channel ratings lately? - no offense to Andy - but I suspect they aren't exactly throwing out cash left and right.

I fail to see the logic of demanding to be paid to do something that you do for free on a regular basis.

You'll get no argument from me on that one! But the douches rise to the top. Just look at Donald Trump.

I love it! Simple supply and demand causes rage and lenghty debate on mp. As long as there are plenty of willing climbers to climb in front of a camera for free, companies will ask for volunteers. If you feel you need to be paid to climb in front of a camera this is not the job for you. Wait around till the big bucks are offered. It's that simple. No really. It is.

Which is why we've enacted laws for minimum wage and non-discriminatory hiring practices ands such, to curb the greed that the capitalistic system breeds.

Andy, please hire johnnymuir. If his climbing skills are as advanced as his eloquent and tasteful forum posts, it will make for great tv

You are cute and your understanding of capitalism or just basic economics is even cuter. Capitalism has led to almost all of the niceties you enjoy today. I take it you have never owned a company and know how hard it really is to compete and succeed. People like you think corporations magically appear.

Actually as a freelance photographer for many years, I do know how incredibly hard it is. Corporations do not appear overnight. But as the Peter Principle states, people (and corporations, since they are people too, right?) tend to rise and rise and rise right up until the point of failure. So when a good company gets too big, it turns evil. Pretty much the standard way of things, as far as public companies are concerned. Wall Street is so overly concerned with short term profit that foresight and ethics are unheard of.

And just because capitalism has lead to niceties doesnt mean other systems couldnt have had us arriving at the same juncture. There is nothing inherent about the universe that dictates that capitalism is the end all be all of economic systems. No physical law stating capitalism is the only way. We CREATED these systems, so they are what we make of them. We could literally make them anything we want. If money is based on NOTHING at all, why cant laws be too? Ie, youre gonna say supply and demand is the natural order, but so what? We can change it if we want to. WE have the power to do it!

As far you calling me cute, thanks man, wanna date?

"That's so sick that you were a professional photographer, you and my 12 year old cousin have so much in common"

I don't know about you guys, but I had to take the rest of the day off work to recover from the shockwave on this zinger he laid down.

What someone needs to explain to me is how is it fair when all parties involved are making money, except for those being filmed? Or really, it doesnt matter who it is, but if someone who is involved in a project, that is a for profit venture, then why should that person not be paid for their time? I just dont see the fairness is everyone making money EXCEPT for a particular party. When the god damn New York Times came knocking to me, I caved and gave them that image for free, cuz it was good for my resume at the time. But how is that fair, that one of the largest media outlets on earth, that makes more in profit in two minutes than I do in a year, how is it fair for them not to pay me? They are charging money for people to see their content, and I am providing part of that content, why am I not being paid for it?

Oh, you know good and well the only way to make money climbing is to win American Ninja Warrior.

Hmmm... I know quite a few programmers who loves to write code on their own (for free) on a regular basis, just for fun. So I guess when they go to work and write programs, they should also do it for free?

You're a little far off of the base on this one i think...

You're saying anything can be anything as long as we BELIEVE. and dude, i stopped believing is that Disney shit a long time ago. Capitalism is pretty great in my opinion.

That said, i agree with you original point to a greater extent.
