The Travel Channel is shooting a segment for an upcoming show about America's National Parks in the Moab region on September 17, 2015, and is looking for anyone who might be rock climbing or canyoneering in the area that day and would be interested in appearing on camera for the show. We will be in the Wall Street/Potash Road area around 3-3:30PM and will be shooting for a few hours.

If anyone is interested, please contact me at andrewm@sharpentertainment.com, or show up in the area around those times.

Thank You!!

I'll do it... but only if they explain, once and for all, how they get the ropes up there.

Wondering what the Travel Channel pays for appearing on camera in a show about America's National Parks?

There is no monetary compensation for this, we are operating on a very small budget and have a minimal crew of 3 people. However, it's a great chance to get on TV and talk about how awesome rock climbing in Moab is!

No compensation? Wikipedia says that your channel is in 91 million homes. You can afford to take em out for dinner after the shoot at the very least.

Or maybe the travel channel is not paying for your time/product, just giving you the opportunity to produce television programming...? Come on dude.

In other words, "give us for shit for free so we can make money off it!"

You're nothing but a chodehammer. I hope you fall off the cliff.

I joined this this place months ago- not because I am a climber per se (yet) but because my 6 year old daughter has taken up rock climbing at our local Y. She has proven to be quite good I am told. My thought is to learn as much as possible about this sport to give her the most educated support I can (this is my climbing ignorance disclaimer)

With that said- this guy seems to only be doing his job and has made a very wise decision to ask here for any sort of help to make his product better. I am bothered by the wishes of him falling off a cliff and the sentiments that everyone ought to be compensated for something they all profess to love to do. Give him a break- he is asking the passionate few that would like the opportunity to A.) be on TV B.) talk about their passion for this sport. If it's not for you- move on.

It's kind of disheartening to see so much of an attack mentality within a sport that seems to pride itself as laidback and open minded... perhaps that's my misguided mindset.

Either way- yes- this IS my first post and no- I am NOT a troll. I'm sure I am going to stir up some more emotions with this post... carry on.

Jamie.

If his job is to con people into giving their time for free while HE makes money (or the organization he is representing is making money), then yea, I hope he falls off a cliff, and I'd say it right to his face with pleasure. As a former professional photographer, I've spent more time than you can imagine fighting just to get paid, and fighting this kind of BS. "Internship" is codeword for "work for free" these days. Writers and photographers especially are asked to work for free "because its digital, dude" not realizing that it costs AT LEAST $10,000 in hardware every 2-3 years to stay competitive.

If he's so passionate about filming climbers, he'll find a way to compensate them for their time, beyond airtime. Whooooo wowwwwie, I get to be on the magic tv box??!?! Oh my gawd! Meanwhile, behind the curtains, Scripps, who owns 65% of the travel channel, is doing pretty well enough that they could pay for their content, or is the following not enough profit for you?

"Net income rose 26% to $193.7 million, or $1.49 a share, from $153.8 million, or $1.07 per share, a year ago. Revenues rose 3.4% to $732.1 million. Ad revenue rose 1.2% to $502.9 million and affiliate fee revenue was up 8.7% to $215.2 million." broadcastingcable.com/news/…

Its business, man. Imagine if I wanted a house built. Should I ask some carpenters to do it for free, just because they're passionate about carpentry? I'll give them credit, isnt that enough? And maybe get an electrician to wire it all up, I'll totally mention it on my blog.

These requests pop up regularly.

Speaking only for myself, what I find bothersome is the lack of transparency. If it's a volunteer opportunity, just say so in the first posting, don't pretend it's a big professional opportunity for someone. If it's a shoestring budget, then I kind of doubt it's a Travel Channel production. More likely somebody just trying to get some video on TC. That's ok by me too, just say so and don't pretend to be something you aren't.

I also suggest, for the sake of your daughter, that you not idealize climbers overmuch.

Jim,
True true... I witness the wrath of posters on forums and figured I'd throw an opinion into the mix. For better or worse.

Mark,
I like your thinking and see you point- and rest assured the information I am chasing is purely technical and informational to help my daughter and her future as a climber. She has a personality and a level of understanding that beats mine. ;)

Johnny- I love the passion buddy.

Sounds like Sharp Entertainment (production co sub of Core Media group) already has a pretty established relationship with the Travel Channel

"TRAVEL CHANNEL is also home to the EXTREME series, FOOD WARS, 101 TASTIEST PLACES TO CHOWDOWN. Additionally, we created two seasons of the thrilling BERT THE CONQUEROR for TRAVEL. Past series for ANIMAL PLANET include PET PSYCHIC ENCOUNTERS and OUTRAGEOUS ANIMALS. Beyond these current series, Sharp is also presently producing additional pilots and specials for TLC, A&E, SCIENCE CHANNEL, TRAVEL CHANNEL, ANIMAL PLANET, FOOD NETWORK, and BIOGRAPHY among others."

As for Scripps, have a heart, the CEO is kind of hurting over there.

Fail to meet targets

failure

Get compensation above target comp anyway with all the stock options, restricted stock units, performance based restricted stock units, etc and a 10% increase in base salary, sure all the employees got that too

mix

I did not mean to ignite such a debate. However, I guess that's my mistake for being a "chodehammer".

I work for a private production company that Travel outsources to do productions. Travel Channel might make plenty of money on Ad Sales, but we do not. We have a limited budget, and nowhere in my original post did I imply that there would be any compensation.

All I was and am asking is if people are in the area that day, and are rock climbing, and want to be of assistance to a TV show, it would be great to allow us to interview you or film you rock climbing. I am not trying to con anyone, and this is a reality TV show, it's supposed to be fun and light hearted, we're not trying to win any oscars here.

We are not asking for to take up too much of people's time, just a few minutes for a quick interview about the area and rock climbing, or let us strap a gopro on you as you climb. It's very easy, and if you're going to be out there already, I don't see the issue.

Johnnymuir: If you're so passionate about not helping other people when they ask a simple favor (especially if there are going to be people out there rock climbing anyway), then maybe you should focus your energy elsewhere. That's so sick that you were a professional photographer, you and my 12 year old cousin have so much in common. Also, next time you post, don't forget guideline #1 at the top: "don't be a jerk".

For anyone that will be in the area rock climbing and wants to help us out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Jamie C: if you and your daughter are in the area and even want to stop by for a quick interview, we're always looking for people of all ages to talk about what we're featuring. We'll also be in downtown Moab for part of the day if that makes it easier.

Thank you to anyone who can lend us some support, and I hope everyone stays safe in life no matter what they're doing.

Andy,

Sorry you're getting such a hard time from my fellow MPers. You sound legit, especially compared to this request:

mountainproject.com/v/are-t…

It's a long-standing tradition on MP to tell people they aren't "paying enough," regardless of the job or situation.

They just can't help it. I think it's called an involuntary response, in the medical world! :)

Just to clarify, is a chodehammer like a chode being used as a hammer?

Awesome! Was she published by the New York Times too?! cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/… Sadly there was no pay in that. And they credited me wrong for the first 24 hours. And there were about a dozen factual errors in the story. Top notch stuff, the NYT.

Was I being a jerk for hoping you fell from a cliff (hyperbole anyway)? Absolutely, well called. But to me, you're just as much of a jerk for asking for creative talent, with no pay, when you yourself are most likely trying to get paid, am I wrong? If this is a legit Travel Channel shoot, then dude, you KNOW people are making money.. why not those who are providing the goods?
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
