the Lascaux Cave Paintings are ancient master pieces. Not an apples to apples comparison. Now the pioneer crap is just that crap.

The decline we are discussing is not in the general society, though that's a different debate you can have in some other forum.

The decline being asserted is occurring within the climbing "community" which is not a community at all but just a collection of individuals, many of whom are antisocial and despise the word community. I don't like other people. That's WHY I climb. If you wanna "share" something with me, share your beer you exurban wanker.

Amongst people that climb outside, there increasingly people who are ignorant of outdoor ethics generally (LNT,etc) and the arcane code of climbing-specific ethics. The reasons this is ongoing are obvious but you can debate them. The effects are obvious, too, but less debatable.

Totally agree. I couldn't care less that Harman Gubler visited Snow Canyon in 1881, but my day was seriously elevated seeing the cave drawings photo above.

So, my great grandfather, Albert Graff, tagged Snow Canyon in 1881.

I was a brand new climber and climbing that 10c on the edge of the cave, yes, I thought that was pretty cool.

Ah, it says "Albert Graf" (not Graff), 1894 (not 1881).

So we all agree that sharpie tagging the 1st flatiron should be left alone for its future historical significance.

No, I'll gladly scrub it once i'm back from France. I just really like scrubbing rocks to be perfectly honest.

I don't know where my brain came up with 1881. 1894 actually makes more sense, my grandmother was born in 1907 and Albert was in his early 20's when he scrawled that.

I'm not defending the Flatiron guy. In the case of pioneer rock scrawling, since it's directly related to me, and it's a small legacy of my heritage, I don't see it as vandalism.

Wanna talk about some serious rock damage? My grandfather worked on construction of the Zion tunnel.

Listen, while we're on the topic of scrubbing rocks; are there any relatively non-toxic but effective ways to remove spray paint from hard sandstone like that of the Morrison boulders?

Jon Zucco - Bless you, sir ... from what I understand that French cave was a mess ...

Holy shit, this thread is a goldmine:

  • Multiple witch hunts and threats of violence
  • Picked up by the Daily Camera AND 9 News
  • A brief history of flatirons climbing
  • Hand-wringing about "the state of youth"
  • The philosophy of graffiti and historical preservation

This thread could be it's own course at CSU. Thank you all for making my week.

There seems to be more graffiti in and around the mouth of the Hobo Cave on Flagstaff in CO. This year the young gangsters have upgraded to pounding their initials into the rock.

Climbing friend,

MSL? - has Mr. Sven Lavransen come back from his injury, his movings to australia, and his video-game and dope-smoking addiction to climb again in boulder area for bold flash of 5.13 climbing rocks, and one day hopeful 5.14 flash?

Myah?

If he does make the bold, difficult, yet enjoyable 5.14 flash after many fish heads and cheese steaks, he would more likely carve a precision sculpture of his own face at the top by punching the rocks with his iron fists. The results would be not all that unlike Mt. Rushmore, myah?

Haha, I actually never saw his response to me on my post.

To Mike:

I hope you settle down, I hope you see the error of your ways and I hope you look past your enormous ego and realize that theres absolutely no reason to intentionally cause this type of children strife in a wonderful community that in nothing but supportive towards all that partake in our amazing sport.

or,

To Mike: Im the 6'3" 200lbs guy that looks like he's been fighting since he was eleven years of age. Im not a big talker and I love a good competition. I look forward to our meeting, as well as explaining to BCSD how you fell off the top when a strong gust came.

Sorry dude, this town is only big enough for one Internet Tough Guy. We're gonna have to wrastle for the title.
