Man, flashbacks to Cpl. Lance Hering. I hope the guy didn't take a bad fall and get messed up. That he was unable to text kind of bodes ill I would say.

Sadly, the ending was not a happy one. He was a dad of some kids that went to the same high school as my kids. There were other HS parents helping trying to find him. More details will probably come forth later.

Getting off trail in the Eldo area should not be taken lightly. You'll encounter very confusing terrain (the 2013 flood did a number around here, too), with lots of very rugged, very loose cliffs and terrain traps. It's easy to get lost with all the gullies and confusion topography. Even a jaunt up Eldo mountain can end with serious injury. I'm hoping for the best.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
