Maybe others know better, but my understanding is that Yosemite Mountaineering School is the only authorized guiding outfit in the Valley.

I've heard the same - for all of Yosemite National Park (which I'm sure is what C meant to say). I chatted with a couple different guided parties on Cathedral back in August, and the guides were all pretty nice folks. One of them did cross our rope, but he asked nicely first. I watched that guy lower his clients off for 15 minutes, as well as discuss a possible rescue when someone fell nearby. He knew his stuff.

Bottom line: I'd climb with YMS.

If your experience level is advanced and you lead 5.6-5.8 trad, why waste money on a guide?

Get a guidebook and jump on some routes.

Guessing that's because he doesn't think it's a waste of money?

Although lots of the YMS guides are probably great, I highly recommend Josh Helling, ask for him.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
