The Cost of Climbing Gear

eli poss wrote:to me climbing gear is expensive because it's more expensive than what I did for fun before i started climbing (playing soccer in the back yard which costed around $100 a year for good cleets and a good ball.) just because it's cheaper than racing motorcycles doesn't mean it's cheap. and if you have enough money to spend $400 a weekend on tires then maybe you aren't giving enough to the people who can't even afford to eat 3 meals a day or to feed their childrenYou can so easily buy a pair of climbing shoes and a chalkbag for under a $100. You're luck you actually had a backyard and a ball. Some just had gravel and an empty can. |

Rereading this makes think of this one.. |

The real cost of climbing is the opportunity cost due to time gone. You're a worse employee, but probably a happier one, so maybe it's all moot anyways. |

Mike Brady wrote: Care to elaborate? I'm 32, fairly liberal, and this makes me feel confused. It's a Winston Churchill quote. I think it's not exactly worded correct though. I think below is right.. If you're 20 and not liberal you have no heart. If you're 40 and a conservative you have no brains. |

You've got it backwards, Bill. |

Jon H wrote:You've got it backwards, Bill. The proper quote is: "If You Are Not a Liberal at 25, You Have No Heart. If You Are Not a Conservative at 35 You Have No Brain" It was falsely attributed to Churchill. It was some french dude in the 1800's who came up with the earliest derivation.Oops! Thanks Jon.. Usually working and MPing ain't no problem. Guess I should spit out this gum before I walk to the truck tonight. |

Dave Holliday wrote: Francois Guizot.Or possibly Anselme Polycarpe Batbie, according to quoteinvestigator.com/2014/… Apart from Batbie, Guizot and Churchill it's also been attributed or mis-attributed to George Bernard Shaw, Benjamin Disraeli, Georges Clemenceau, Otto von Bismarck, Victor Hugo and many others. Translated from the French, the original was "He who is not a 'républicain' at twenty compels one to doubt the generosity of his heart; but he who, after thirty, persists, compels one to doubt the soundness of his mind". 'Républicain' means a revolutionary of the 18th century French or American kind. It looks like age 20 has inflated over time along with the cost of climbing gear. |
