Climbing in Newfoundland

Hey guys,

My job has a possibility of sending me to Newfoundland for a period of time (6mo - 1yr I think). I was just curious as to what the climbing (and other general outdoor activities) are like in the area? Looking at the MP page, it seems like there is a lot of it, just not listed here. Found a bunch of stuff surfing the web, but was hoping for some first hand stories! Let me know whats good.

Thanks!

There is an active community - Facebook search for 'Climb Newfoundland Discussion'. You might find someone willing to provide beta there.

Hi Alex,
I'm one of the people who started the aforementioned Facebook group and also own the Climb Newfoundland site (www.climbnewfoundland.com). What you're going to find all depends on where in the province you are. Around St. John's there is plenty of developed rock and ice climbing as well as a gym... The rest of the island has plenty of rock but not a lot of development, some around the west coast and some amazing stuff on the extremely remote south coast.

On top of that there is basically good opportunity for most outdoor activities that don't involve mountains... world class hiking, sea kayaking etc. Let me know if you want any more specific info.

Cheers,
Phil

I'll be St John's in a couple of weeks visiting family. Are there any boulders in the vicinity that might be good for a solo mission? I don't boulder a ton but I'd guess I'm looking for stuff up to about v4.

Also anywhere in town to rent a crash pad?

There is quite a bit of bouldering fairly close to town, but nothing so close as to not need a vehicle, so hopefully you have access to one!

There are a lot of boulders up at Fort Amherst which aren't documented on here yet... they are at the top of the hill just previous to where these routes are described. You could have plenty of fun there without knowing the exact names and grades. A little bit further away but still pretty close and better documented are Blackhead and Marine Lab. My pick of those three would probably be Marine Lab for a solo mission because it is well documented, climbed often and can easily be protected with a single pad and no spotter.

As for pad rentals, you might have some luck at the local climbing gym (Wallnuts) but I'm not entirely sure on that one.

Thanks for the reply Phil. I will have a car and apparently marine lab road is 9 minutes from where I'll be staying so I'll probably check that out.

As for renting a pad, I'll give wallnuts a ring. I figured renting a pad might be a long shot but it would certainly beat whatever baggage fees the airlines would hit me with!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
