He should have to climb it before he can renames it.

Well McKinley did not climb it either...

Mckinley may have never even been to Alaska.

McKinley not only never climbed Denali, he never got to Alaska. A sourdough who supported his bid for the presidency of the US named the peak as a show of support, ignoring the traditional Native American name. Plenty of people get peaks named after them without climbing them, and without being climbers (Everest, Fitzroy, Washington, and many more).

Obama is not naming or renaming our highest peak, he is restoring the original name used by Native Americans.

Denali is probably a bit too cold for his tropical sensibilities.

McKinley is a probably a bit too dead to be doing anything.

As it should be... To many of us it has always been Denali

According to the Wikipedia page, different native tribes around the mountain had different names, but all the names translated as "big mountain" or "tall mountain" or some such, and the Russians called it "Big Mountain" in Russian when they owned Alaska. So maybe the right name would be just "Big Mountain" to properly match how all the natives named it?

Just a dumb idea. I'm fine with Denali, it's a nice name. And calling it McKinley never really made any sense.

Not quite the same thing, but the executive order was issued by Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, who at least knows a crampon from carabiner (she ran REI and she's been up Rainier and Vinson).

Maybe they should at least fly him by the mountain if he is going to change the name. I don't really care about the name I am not going to climb it, way to cold for me. I think I like Denali better anyway and have always heard it called both.

But if you are going to change the name of something I think you should at least have to visit it in some way.

He's apparently going to do a segment of the Bear Grylls show while he's up there. Maybe that will get him close to Denali.

No one calls it McKinley anymore.

He'll do anything to make it appear he's being presidential...
without actually doing anything Presidential (like leading this country).

Buckle up your seat belts it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Mt. Balanced-Budget not only sounds bad geographically but is a virtual impossibility with Obama. Probably best to stick with Denali I guess.

I lived in Alaska for two years and NO ONE in that state called it Mt. McKinley.

Huh? Tell us why... Because it's the tallest mountain on earth?

woah woah woah...
Regardless of your political views, let's leave the politics at home. If I needed the rhetoric, I would turn on the 24hr news media, not MP.

I'm happy to see the name change [officially], and like many have pointed out, it's been the name MANY have used for years.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
