climbers or hikers?

Many climbers ascend the E Face of Teewinot without ropes - the easiest way up is 4th class - but many find that the route-finding somewhat confusing. Sounds like they had moved well off of the `easy` way up. I cannot imagine day-hikers even attempting that face, intimidating as it is.

I wonder how two people who were not roped both died...

Alas they wouldn't be the first. ANAM has several accident reports about inexperienced climbers on Tweeinot.

One tried to catch her friend's fall and was pulled off?

We were at the Lupine trailhead Saturday morning and heard from someone that they were technical climbers on a rest day that got off route. I came to the same conclusion as Frank - one fell and knocked the other off. Unfortunately we returned to the ranch pretty late and didn't get a chance to ask around for confirmation.
