I have to weigh in here... there's not much that pisses me off, but this whole thing is egotistical and disgusting. So very hoping that the craigslist response was just a troll, because I naively don't want to think that any human is actually that selfish.

Is there any way we can gang up on him, and let him know it's not just one person that's sickened by him signing his name on the rock, but the ENTIRE COMMUNITY?

A shaming post in the parking lot may be enough to embarrass the culprit.

Get a picture with a brief summary of their actions. Keep it posted until they comply.

I don't think engaging in a conversation/discussion with an idiot like that is gonna make him change his attitude. You might actually be risking yourself to get into a fight on top of the cliff. My suggestion, to whoever happens to witness this douchebag doing his thing, is to simply take a couple of photos of him in the act (maybe even his car plates?) and then file a report with the police. I think that should be enough evidence and for sure there will be lots of people that could back up the story.

Yeah. This type of person is more likely to change their ways when faced with police or fines. That's why we have those sorts of things. Some people just don't understand that they ought to stop doing something unless there are financial or legal consequences.

But really an IP isn't going to do much since you can get a new one as easy as typing /ipconfig release and then /ipconfig renew. ISP keeps a log of who has had the IP, but you need to convince them to break the Privacy Act of 1974 without a subpoena.

The law defines the line. Because everyone's personal lines are different, the law is ideally a mechanism where everyone compromises on where the line is and what the consequence is if one crosses it. You aren't batman. (Unless you are). So don't take the law into your own hands on behalf of climbers. You'll give us a bad name.

I'm actually inclined to agree with powhound here. In my experience, cops are often jaded, uninterested, or incompetent. I have the greatest respect for what they do, but after half a dozen years of being subjected mind-numbing paperwork it's hard to still actually care about the welfare of the people. Which again, makes me respect those that do still care even more.

Point is, cops should be a last-ditch measure of authority. I'm certainly not calling for street brawls, but we're all (supposedly) civilized people here, so we should be able to actually talk about differences face to face. Or occasionally publicly, very loudly, shame an idiot to their face without having get police involved. I agree the law defines what is out of line (and no matter how much it might seem black and white, there's always shades of gray somewhere that really do need to be defined), but it's still ultimately up to us to decide where the law puts that line in the first place, and make sure everyone else understands/agrees/has a legitimate argument against that placement.

I'm certainly not going to start a fight, but if I do ever run into this, or any, moron writing on the rock I will not hesitate to publicly and loudly shame and argue with them.
