Recommended places to camp (or cheapish hotel) near Chapel Pond /Keene Valley?
|
Any favorite spots? Will be there Monday through Thursday of next week, if that makes a difference... |

Just to the right of the pond as you're looking at it is a short road that leads to a clearing that is free camping. Fire pit, no facilities. If you get to beer wall parking you've gone too far. |

But I was half a bottle of Pinot in by that point and its a bit fuzzy. Thanks man! |

Plenty of spots below the slabs to through a tent down as long as you're far enough from the road and water. I also have put a tent up in the parking lot next to marcy field in the past - nice and easy to find in the dark if you show up late. It's on the left past Keene Valley going north/west, next to the big field. The ADKs tend to have pretty lax camping rules. Be respectful and clean up after yourself and you won't have much issue. |

Any recommendations as far as a good deal on a hotel? |
|
Tmax-N-Topo's hostel is great. It's on Rte 73 between Cascade Lakes & Lake Placid. Bunk rooms as well as private rooms IIRC. Very reasonable rates. |

There are quite a few places to stay in Keene Valley and Keene. There is a hostel right in Keene Valley almost across from the Noonmark Diner (Keenevalleyhostel.com). There's also several bed and breakfasts in town (google: where to stay lifeinkeeneny.com). The hostel up past cascade lakes is also good, but not as accessible to Chapel Pond area as the places right in the Valley. If you're looking for proximity to the Lake Placid "night life" and climbing, then maybe that'd be a better choice. Also check out air B&B. I know a few folks on there that have great places to stay. |

Cobble Mountain Lodge is the cheapest hotel room. Tell the guy on the phone you want a deal and you'll wiling to pay cash. He'll only only take credit cards but will lower the price. A nice spot! |

I seem to recall The Hostel in Keene Valley to be around $25/night. It's a lot closer to Chapel Pond. However, I've heard fantastic things about Tmax-N-Topo's hostel, though I haven't stayed there. |

Kevin Heckeler wrote: What's a deal to you (price range)? That would help narrow the suggestions.Fair enough! If it were $60 bucks for a room with 2 beds and not too depressing, I'd call it a deal. This Tmax and Topo situation sounds super promising though. Hostel, so we can almost feel legit, but still all the comforts of home. Thanks to everyone who's writing in, by the way, this is what makes mountainproject awesome. |

While we're on the subject, I'm reading Adirondack Rock and am just completely blown away by how much there is to do, no idea how we're going to pick from all this abundance! |

Hostel, so we can almost feel legit, but still all the comforts of home.$60 for anyplace decent is a little on the lower side for the area. You can find rooms for that much, just not sure I'd recommend them. For example, I really like Trail's End and Keene Valley Lodge but their rates are (generally well) above that threshold. Already some good alternative lodging suggestions posted so you probably should run with one of those. |

Well, in that case, look at Partition (5.9) up there, amazing corner with awesome exposure. |

Optimistic wrote:Any favorite spots? Will be there Monday through Thursday of next week, if that makes a difference...I tried getting a room for September and EVERYTHING was booked. Staying one night at the Econo Lodge in Lake Placid. Camping night 2. A really nice, not cheap, place to stay is the Stagecoach Inn. Owners are great people, awesome cooks, and run a beautiful place. |

We're going to give this Topo and Tmax thing a try. Folks seem happy with it and the price is right at 28 bucks per person.... |
