Dirtbag existence vs. educated and employed

^^^ agree with you C. Archibald , he took the potentially worst aspects about teaching and construes them as the norm for all. False. But it sounds like the OP is not into education so it's a moot point I guess...

I make my own schedule, so if I want to work 40-60 hours a week this month, I can. If I don't want to work, I don't. I make $25 an hour in rural WV, and could easily make $40+ if I wanted to live in a city. The only people who will say that you definitely need a Bachelor's degree are the suckers who already paid for their Bachelor's degrees. You can always go back for that if things change down the road.
An associate nursing degree is different than any other associate degree I can think of. It's hard, it's legit, and it'll get you a job. Not too many other associate degrees can do that.

Have you noticed the trend toward BSN lately though? It's getting harder and harder for new grad ADN's to get a job.

For those that didn't like my rant about teaching, just to clarify, I don't know anyone who did teach for america. I also think teaching might be a more long term prospect outside of denver. Denver has a major glut of teachers (think 50 to 100 applicants per job). It keeps wages very low, the work load high, and doesn't give job security. Hardly a position I could see myself growing old in.

Not mutually exclusive - you are 18. Go climb for 1-3 years. Then go to college and get a degree that will land you a job. Work for a year, dirtbag for a year , get a grad degree. Or go get another job. No one will question why you didn't go to college immediately. Or why you took a year off when you were in your 20s.

What you don't want to be is that poor guy in his 40s that has minimal ability to earn money and has no choice but to be a dirtbag.
Also listen to the training beta podcast with Adam Ondra. Climbs 5.15 and is in college.

Umm....actually the world probably does need engineers; I'm sure you meant, "The last thing the world needs is another lawyer".

Jeez ! Us H titty fucking Christ !

Engineers giving advice ? Hahahahahaahahah what a crock !

Never met a single one that had any real world knowledge ! All books and theory!

Only problem with that is theory don't always work in real life ! Behind every great failure there is an engineer involved . Fucking know NOTHINGS!

I've spent 35 years ignoring anything an engineer has to say , plan or otherwise expect me to do .

I didn't need a degree to make over six figures a year ! More than any engineer I've ever met .

And I did it doing something I loved doing and was still able to climb , ski , travel 14 days every other month ! Always had plenty of money to do what ever I wished , buy what ever I wanted .

Never had a trust fund , inheritance or other such rubbish .

Here's some real advice , plan for your future today ! I cannot even begin to tell you how pathetic it is seeing40- 50-60 something's trying to do the same work they did 20-30 years ago listening to them say I wish I had planned . Or settle into mediocre jobs because they cannot retire and are too feeble to do the physical work they used to .

I watch them try to dump hundreds into 401k accounts thinking they still have a snowballs chance to retire ,but now it's too late .

I really enjoy the people on here telling you that you won't get a job as an engineer due of your lack of proper grammar on an online forum dedicated to climbing. The guy is clearly articulate and while I agree getting an email from another engineer with bad grammar makes me think he or she is an idiot... this guy's opening post is no where near that level. Also, the idiot engineers who send me poorly worded and punctuated emails are, you guessed it, still engineers with a job.

Well as a software dev i can promise you grammar doesn't really matter, tons of people you deal with don't even speak english as a first language.

Why all the animosity towards engineers? (I'm not one- just wondering why all the hate).
Lawyers I understand, but engineers seem pretty benign

I'm not an engineer so I have no reason to defend them, but....I gotta say, your rant about engineers knowing nothing is amongst the most r-tarded posts I have read in a while. Well done!! Because yah, engineers sure are stupid. Only an idiot could get New Horizons to fly past Pluto. And only an idiot could build a skyscraper like the Sears Tower. Or an F-22. Or a high speed train. Or GPS technology. Or (insert any number of items). Seriously, you get the award for dumbest post of the week.

Luc,
If I were you, I would listen to the advice of Will S and Brian Scoogins. They are (as per usual I might add), making well thought out and useful comments. Iceman? Not so much. (Though to be fair to Iceman, he is rightfully suggesting that you don't act like a dirtbag your whole life, lest you end up a broken down dirtbag doing manual labor at age 65).

I would wager a couple cans of cat food and a case of PBR that Iceman's a contractor. The headaches contractors have to go through during installation are engineers doing what they do these days.. Overdoing it.

I'm enjoying the spray in this thread. This what I did and now I'm sitting pretty at 40.. Haha..

This is fantastic. Who do you think designed all that skiing and climbing gear? Jimmy-bob from across the block? Joe at the pub? He's a pretty smart bloke.

I'd bet you're the guy on site who's 'been doing it this way for 50 years kid, don't think you can tell me a better, quicker and safer way to do it.'

I like beer and climbing....but not together. Usually I drink a cold brew after a long 8 hr day in the sun playing rocks. This usually happens 3 times a week. I then go to work on monday and climb trees.I have a business degree and did not want to work inside so I save trees now. I have a truck with a topper it is pretty neat.

Cheers.

To all those confused...just live your life day by day/pay check to paycheck...what ever makes you happy. Live it. Enjoy it. To quote the great Martin Luther Einstein "Everything in moderation including moderation"

You're talking about those guys who drive trains, right?

Yeah engineers--those people who designed all of those cams, belay devices, ropes, 'biners, bolts, whatever, that climbers use everyday...and oh yeah--the cars, planes, bikes, whatever that actually get you to the crag...and ah the roads, the bridges, the tarmac...well you get the picture.

Not so bad at 20 years old maybe - probably not such a great plan as you age though. I don't think "dirtbagging" carries much of a retirement plan.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
