I periodically go up to Devils Lake and hope for a walk up site to be available and when there is not there are usually other campgrounds around. But I fear one day I'll be stranded with nowhere to stay (I have come close before when most all campsites were full). I live too far away to drive back home so if need be in an emergency I had a thought. What if I threw up a hammock in the woods somewhere out of sight and kept quiet just to sleep. Is there an acceptable place to park a car with a sticker without creating me any problems? Just as an emergency plan I am not trying to camp free every weekend here...Or maybe a good place to even sleep in the car tho this is not preferred. I think maybe you could sleep in your car at Walmart in Baraboo it is a 24 hour and many Walmarts are ok with it. If I needed to use the hammock method is it acceptable to park a car with a sticker in one of the public lots, such as down by the beach/east bluff overnight?

Climbing friend, I suggest you get a job sir. That's what your parents did. The bums will always do the losing! The bums will always be losing!

Day use ends at 11pm. Most places like Walmart will let you park there if you buy something from their store, as that makes you a patron...I've heard rumors that post offices leave their front doors unlocked so people can come inside at night, not sure if that is still true.

I have never once seen Double KD Ranch Campground full, even over 4th of July weekend. Eight minutes from the lake. They just let you setup wherever you fit. $20/ per night. I stay there most weekends.

Join the Chicago Mountaineering Club. Year around camping, no reservations, 24hr access, closer to climbing than most every other campground. I think it's like $25/year plus membership dues.

Non-members are allowed on outing weekends (typically every other weekend in the warmer months) for the same $10/weekend without having to accompany a member. Just to be clear, you can just decide to be a member and join the next day. You have to attend 3 outings and have member sponsorship. Check their website for details.

Roof tops in downtown Baraboo work great! Especially after bars close.
