Hi all, I was hoping to get some info on this area:

mountainproject.com/v/tufa-…

In particular,

- any suggested guidebooks?

- suggested accommodations? (camping? nearby hostels or AirBNB?)

- bolted well?

I am looking to go over Thanksgiving. (I realize not to climb the rock when its wet).

Any other info would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

There is no guidebook.
1 page foldout at local Rei / AZ hiking shack but otherwise MP is all you need.
Well bolted but stick clip maybe useful.
Tufa city is in the sun so earlier the better and go to other walls for shade.
Dirt road needs wrangler or better (or 45 min hike).
Not sure about camping?
Super fun and unique climbing

The topos that Hendrixson posted in the photo section of each area here on MP are pretty up to date and should help you find the route you are looking for.

Not sure what the camping situation is currently.

Solid 4WD vehicle is necessary.

Bees can be very dangerous. Old hives disappear and new hives appear every season. Stay away from the hum. That climb isn't worth it.

Tufa City is typically the hottest wall at the Homestead. Even when it is relatively cool out, the relentless sunshine there can be wilting. Unfortunately, it is often less than perfect on that wall in November. You should still give it a try, though, as it is unique and amazing. Rough Rider is your best bet for awesome, tall climbs if it feels hot at Tufa City but moving between those two walls is a tough hike.

Camping is very limited at Homestead. It is your best bet because driving in and out every day would limit your time greatly.

The only area I know that is available is beyond the last gate. That marks the parcel bought by AF. On the left is a small area used by some. Probably room for 10 close friends.

The lack of campsites needs to be addressed soon. Once the road is fixed it may be easier to do day trips instead.

As of a few months ago there was a sizable bee hive in a large pocket early into Tufa Yard Dash. There used to be foam filling the hole because bees love to make it into a hive. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around there should be more up to date beta about the insect situation.

Thanks for the info guys. If I do not have a high clearance vehicle, how long is the hike in? I'm from out state and would probably be renting a car in PHX or somewhere else in the state.

The hike along the road would take quite a while. Maybe 1.5-2 hrs. There is a more direct approach but it involves a google map search and bushwhack.

You are better off hitchhiking; getting a ride. Hopefully, with all the donations to the AF for getting open, we can get a better push for the road to be fixed.

Hope you donate soon!

Hiking in from the highway takes about an hour for a slightly above average fit person. Start on Rough Rider in the morning then head to Tufa City after 1 30 or two. Takes about 20-30 minutes. No problem spring or fall temp wise. Marley can be warm even in the winter. Winter has shorter days and cooler temperatures so you can climb in the sun unless you are one of those "it's 3 degrees too warm for the friction to be perfect, never mind" types.

And send money to the access fund for saving our access to it. Thanks
