Good idea, an MP hackathon. Maybe there will be an MountainProject API someday.

Patrick, thanks for the Climbing Mag reference. I guess Rock N' Road was the logical data source before MountainProject.

Connor, you're right, there are many interesting possibilities. Maybe in version 3!

One small catch to using crowdsourced data: well known areas and areas closer to population centers/active climbing communities will be overrepresented in terms of reported areas, route density, and # ratings. I call this the Front Range bias ;)

Shows a plethora of routes around Flagstaff and Tucson in Arizona, but nothing for the hundreds of routes in and around Phoenix? Odd.

Had a similar thought.

On another note, Wisconsin works hard to document climbs and it shows. Good job!

Florida? Has anyone else ever been to Florida?

While I feel really sorry for Florida, this makes me dread living in Texas.

fossana, the bias in crowdsourced data is definitely an issue. I guess that's why researchers spend so much time designing a unbiased sample. There might be ways to normalize the data to account for the "Front Range bias", like distance to MountainProject headquarters, but then interpretation of the numbers becomes more convoluted. Trade offs.

Greg, there were some problems in original data I used. Version 3 should fix that.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
