Has anyone forgone standard health insurance and opted for a basic catastrophic insurance?
If so...
Who do you use?
Monthly premium?
Deductible?

I know the AAC used to have an option with membership that covered up to $15k but after digging a bit, it doesn't seem to exist anymore.

Given your previous question, you should consider going to the Affordable Care Act website, healthcare.gov and look to see if you qualify to sign up this year or need to wait until next year.

In either case, you probably don't have the income to afford a policy without subsidy. But the subsidies are hefty enough to allow most people with less means to afford care.

SMarsh,
I simply want catastrophic insurance. It has less to do with my income and more to do with me wanting to not pay a significant amount each month for a service I haven't utilized in over a year now. I do want to cover myself from bankruptcy in the case of a major accident or illness though. Hope that clarifies my situation.

Good stuff, Dylan B. In my state, the only "catastrophic", I've been able to find with a deductible under $5,000 doesn't cost significantly less than standard health insurance with a $3,000 deductible. I'll keep looking and making phone calls and see what I come up with.

Your choice.

Dylan's suggestions fit exactly what I said. Thanks, Dylan.

You are allowed to take whatever risks you want. However, I as a taxpayer object to charities and government using any of my money to bankroll your risks if you don't pay for them yourself.

SMarsh,
I hear you -- I'm a tax paying citizen as well. Most of my work is freelance though so I purchase my own health insurance. My situation is more I've been paying for something I haven't utilized in 14 months but want to avoid major medical expenses in the case of an accident. Most of the "catastrophic" plans I've found aren't significantly cheaper than the regular insurance so I thought I'd consult the board here since there's probably several people here in a similar position.

adampeters -- good reminder! I had a similar plan with them in 2011-12.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
