City of Rocks in October

Hi all,

I was hoping to draw upon the collective wisdom of MP.com a bit. I'm considering planning a trip to CoR in the first couple of weeks of October, but I'm concerned about the weather there. I've only been once before, but my recollection is that most of the stuff I was interested in was west-facing.

It seems like it would be pretty easy to chase the sun and climb in warmer temps that time of year, although you might have to just wait out the mornings sometimes. Am I off-base on that?

Does the City typically get major snowfalls in October? I'd be bummed to plan the whole thing and then have to bail due to snow!

Is the climber's shop just outside the park entrance still open that time of year?

Thanks!

Was there last year in early October for a couple of days and had fantastic weather during the day. Hoping to go back this October and spend a a bit more time.

That being said I had people warn me that snow storms are a definite possibility in October and if the forecast calls for snow I'd probably head to Smith.

Toby, October is an outrageously good time for cragging in COR. I spent 2 solid weeks there in 2013 in mid October and had sun on most west faces around 10/11 am. In regards to the weather, that area is wet belt and pulls pretty quick cells through; ie: it may snow or rain but will blow through typically very quickly. And the granite also dries very quickly if it does get a good soaking. Definitely worth watching the weather. You can usely head to Rock City (local pizza and beer joint) and get the updated daily forecast.

As for climbing shop nearby....there isnt one that I am aware of. Aslo free camping on BLM land just outside the park.
Do the trip!
You wont regret that 2 weeks!

Cheers,
Z

First couple of weeks in Oct is typically beautiful there. We usually get an early winter blast that lasts for a few days(and gets the skiers all pumped-up). Then...a good Indian summer sets in. I think the biggest buzz killer that time of year is if it gets cloudy and WINDY. It can really nuke there. Keep in mind, Castle State Park is a great option if it's cold and windy up at the main area.

Thanks, folks! Yeah, Smith is reliably gorgeous that time of year, but that's the local crag for us. Looking to get out of town!

I'll try to plan the trip and just have a backup plan and keep an eye on the weather in case something blows through. Probably something in California, maybe down near Tahoe, or even Bishop if there's a cold snap!

Rock City is what I was thinking of - I know they sell guidebooks there and last trip I took the guidebook wasn't available online. Seems like it is now, though, so that's sort of a moot point, although them being open is of course a nice bonus for food/beer reasons!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
