To bivy along the ridge, is it necessary to obtain a permit?

Wouldn't the NPS be the right people to ask?

I think (from my limited knowledge of the area...). You need a permit to spend the night. It's free though. They will also want you to have a bear can, which they offer for free where you get the permits..

We were just on Forbidden recently. Nice area! Have fun!

you will need a permit but fortunately, if you bivy on the ridge, you won't need a bear canister. if you stay in the basin any night you'll need a bin in that case.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
