A friend and I are going to Thailand to sport-climb in January/February. Where is the BEST place to climb if you're looking for single-pitch sport and you want the cheapest accommodations possible?

Any beta would be sincerely appreciated.

Tonsai/railey is what I'd recommend. You can stay on the backpacker/climber side which is way cheaper than the other that caters more to resort minded folks

You are going to LOVE it!!! I've been 11 times and can suggest some fun things to do... Ton Sai/Railay are really fun, and have the largest concentration of climbs! Also some of the cheapest bungalows to be found... And some very expensive ones too. There are some other spots that also shouldn't be missed... Depends how long you have??? I suggest at least 2 months...!

I also am hoping to spend a month (january) in thailand and tonsai was top of my list but i heard the whole area got bought out by a resort and is now under construction? is that just an insane rumor to keep people away?

I think the best climbing is at Chong Phli, Ao Nang. Long routes with classics at most grades. You can stay at the crags as well, not sure of the cost but I think it is below average - though not the most deluxe accommodations.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
