Watch your leg!

Watch the rope, I use to direct attention to the rope. When it gets caught behind a flake or the crossing of doubles.

Obviously no standard term in a clear and concise word or two exists < thread ~~~ drift ~~~

'Watch the rope' which seems to be most popular isn't very specific. It could be taken, esp by someone who is new or isn't fluent in English, as pointing out a snag, the run of the rope through runners that need to be extended, Z clipping, etc.

I think the standard term is anything that both the leader and belayer understand to mean "the rope is behind your leg".

That could be any of the above mentioned terms or something entirely different, e.g.:

"tripping face" - You're "tripping" on the rope, and you're going to flip over and slam your "face" into the wall

"tripping sack" - same, but indicates that the rope is running by your "sack" to get behind your leg. (may not be appropriate/relevant for all leaders.)

"watch your leg" or "watch the rope" pretty self explanitory, even if the leader has no idea what you're talking about, they'll likely look at either "the rope" or "their leg" when they hear that and realize what's going on.

"hey I'm gonna take you off belay for a second here" - always gets the leader to look down at you. This will often bring the rope/leg tangle into their field of view

etc.

Would like to submit "calfroping" and "hamlining".

While we're at it how about "nylonrearing", "kernbacking" and "backbraiding".

"Watch your leg/foot" or "careful with your leg/foot."

"The rope is behind your leg!"

(This makes more sense to me then "your leg is behind the rope," and seems to me to be far better than indeterminate utterances like "watch your leg.")

+1 for Skullcracker or Nutcracker as Chris has indicated. Whatever the term the process is definitely a candidate for whacking your skull. Headbanger??

I think it is a verb you are looking for, not a noun. I don't see what the problem is with a simple phrase, but I guess a lot of people can't concentrate that long.

After so many pages it makes no difference what you call it as long as your partner Knows what you mean. I usually say " Ropes behind your leg fool do something about it the quicker the better". If your partner has no idea what your talking about inform them. If they know but don't care possibly time to climb with someone who does or you deal with the aftermath. Move left rope over right hip, move right rope over left hip.

As we're still no closer to anything resembling a consensus (and of course it's our job, right here in this thread to get this squared away for all of the climbing world....or maybe not), how about the two words that get you to look at the problem: "Rope-Leg!"?

Five pages and no vote for dick-stab-in-the-fart-box? Bitd, that was pretty much the reigning catch-all for crag-related obscurities.

Careful, you're letting the rest of us know how old you are.

I seem to recall that phrase was coined by Angry on RC.noob.

Matt N... "Wear a helmet"
aikibujin... "beware of rope"
Gregger Man... "Neck brace" & "vegetable"
Chris Duca... "F'ed"
C Miller... "Skullcracker"
gription... "Leg/fix that"
rgold... "Underlegging" < This is also something you do in the bedroom?
Tyson Anderson... "Inverting"
J C Wilks... "Tripline"
Hamilton Kibbe... "Tripping face"
Daryl Allan... "Calf roping" & "hamlining"
Mark E Dixon... "Whack-a-mole"
Mathias... "Rope-leg"

Back stepping, tripping, and stepping through are out for various reasons described within the thread.

My favorites that have been submitted:
"Underlegging" - rgold (because it sounds dirty)
"Tripline" - J C Wilks (inventive and easy to understand)
"Calf roping" - Daryl Allan (I am from Texas)

BryanE, M Sprague, csproul, rocknice2, Tim Lutz, taipan jam, PRRose, jaspur, Brian Abram, BryanE, M Sprague, matt c, Jake Jones, gription, Em Cos, John Wilder, Joshua1979, powhound84, Fiona Dunne, limpingcrab, J Q, Chris treggE, J C Wilks, rgold, budman, and myself have all indicated that they either use this phrase or something very similar. "Watch the leg"

The votes are leaning towards a winner. Five syllables, but easily understandable.

Although... I may just start calling out fire or E.M.S. because you may need it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
