If we drive in late, can we still get a permit? whats the likely hood of camping by the river ?

There is so much camping to be had in Linville. You can camp anywhere in the forest just as long as you are 50' from a main trail and 100' from a road. I think those are the rules. I am not sure if the whole backcountry camping permit thing is still enforced. I believe people camp at the top of Shortoff (which is wilderness) all the time without permits. There are all sorts of spots right off of the road to Table Rock. Are you looking to boulder down by the river? If not, I don't advise camping down there since it will be a long strenuous hike out to rope climb along the ridgeline.

Last time I checked (and it's been a while) the permits were for the west side of Linville. I've never had a permit to camp anywhere near the climbing areas like Table Rock, Hawksbill, Shortoff...I've camped by the river with a permit from the west side, but never coming in from the east.

Chris, I believe the permit system pertains to anywhere that is considered wilderness. Table Rock and Wiseman's View are two examples on each side that probably would be, but are technically not wilderness due to the need for facilities.

To the OP: Anywhere there is a road and/or facilities it's not wilderness. Most of the areas are okay to camp in unless otherwise marked. Also, the road in from the east follows no real boundary marker, but the road along the west side generally strattles the border. There are tons of campsites along both roads - no need to camp near the TR parking lot with everyone else.

Also, what Tom said - the River is way out of the way unless you plan to boulder down there.

Thanks guys, found a camping spot the first night at table rock and then the 2nd night we set up on the ridge away from the trail with an amazing view. It was great. First time climbing there... It was an experience for sure... The theme of the trip.."bushwhacking " but still climbs and gorgeous views. Felt like I was in the west coast.
