Bravo indeed! Steve would get a kick out of having a big chunk of stone placed in his honor. I can imagine he is looking down thinking "I'd be bouldering on that during my lunchbreaks if I were still there." Miss that guy...

That is so tragic. It has been many years since I lived in Tucson. I did not know Steve but the Tucson climbing community is tight. This loss is surely deeply felt. My condolences to his family and friends.

It has now been over two years since our brother Steve died with his pup Buster. Steve and I had often spoken of the need for an entity to encourage responsible exploration of our nation's natural and cultural resources. It has taken these two years to deal with his death and frame what that might look like. The Steven Wallace Johnson Center for Popular Stewardship is now in formation. It will be launched during a radio interview on 14 June 2015. See stevescenter.org I would like to use some of the photos that were posted on this site and any others the members might have. You will note that I have already included two photos from this site. I will happily take them down if an owner objects. Please contact me at stevescenter@gmail.com with photos or stories about Steve and has love of the outdoors that we might use to tell his story and explain the purpose, vision and mission of the Center. Thanks......ken

Well, this is about as sad as it gets... I went to Ken's new site to honor Steve and found this: "Kenneth Johnson, creator and manager of the Steven Wallace Johnson Center for Popular Stewardship passed away suddenly and tragically on June 21, 2015, at the age of 69. As he had done many times in recent years, Ken was on a solo field trip to document and photograph remote rock art sites. While on a rough dirt road in Davis Canyon, just outside of Utahs Canyonlands National Park, his vehicle became stuck in sand. While attempting to dig out his vehicle, Ken apparently suffered a fatal heart attack. When the authorities found him six days later, he was sitting under a nearby tree with his shovel still in his hands. Therefore its assumed he passed quickly and peacefully." Deepest condolences to the Johnson family and friends.

Shit. This is very sad news indeed. I heard he was missing but assumed he had been found. I hope for inner peace to the family and friends who I know must be suffering.
