Hello all,

I just moved from North Wales UK to grand rapids MI. I am looking to get back into bouldering after a long break due to injury. I don't drive which kinda sucks, and don't really know the area that well.
I know there are two indoor walls in grand rapids
but they don't open till 5pm (WTF).. I am basically free all day to train up until 5pm due to wifey returning from work..
Anyone got a woody and need a training partner? Are there any hidden / secret crags or boulders around GR that are ok to climb?
Are there any urban areas that are ok to climb?
Any help would be great.

Regards.

Michael.

Yeah, unfortunately the gyms don't open early. I've been climbing at Inside Moves for a couple years now - pretty good gym, family owned. If you can make it out sometime in the evening, let me know! Usually there on Tues and Thurs.

Not much for crags in this area. There is a park out east of the city - has a silo with climbing holds on it (up to ~8 feet high maybe. There are no set problems, but you could definitely traverse and make problems for yourself.

Also, Grand Ledge has some okay bouldering and toprope climbs, but it's over by Lansing. Mountain Project has a guide for it and there are free guides too.

Not sure about buildering... haven't tried it here, but you might try it at GRCC or maybe Grand Valley's downtown campus. Seems like the universities would be more open to it.

I posted a link to this forum on a facebook group - hopefully it will help you get connected. Good luck! Hopefully we'll see you around the gym sometime!

I don't have a home wall myself, but I know of some people who do. But they probably work most days as well and wouldn't be able to climb until after 6. If you want to check one out with me sometime, let me know. There is also a bouldering gym in Holland about 35 minutes away that is usually open during the school year at 3. But that is also currently closed until 5 until late August.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
