Well that sucks! And unfortunately, if that happened once, it's likely to happen again. Thanks for the heads up, sorry about your car and whatever they took.

Bummer to hear about the break-in. Worth noting that The Dome is VERY accessible from Boulder with a paved trail going about 90% of the way to the parking lot. I feel that it's safe to say that the Dome parking lot gets a different amount of traffic then say most other pull-outs higher up. I have always worried about that pull-out as well as the Boulder Falls one. Again, super bummer to hear about this.

My window was broken there a few years ago. It was a super windy day and I thought that a rock in the wind had broken it- duh. Figured out a while later that it was an attempted break-in, probably foiled by one of my amga students returning to the parking lot for gear.

Thanks for the heads-up as this is/was a place that we leave cars regularly for carpooling in the canyon. Might reconsider that plan.

This is why I end up carrying so much to the crag. I wake up late, so I take everything with me in the car. I get to the crag, and I really don't want to leave any gear behind, in case it gets stolen. Then I end up carrying half a ton to the crag to clip some bolts.

Thanks, thieves.

Bummer this happened, sorry. :-(

Sorry that happened to you, how many other cars were at the lot?

No, man, gear thefts and vehicle break-ins occur up and down BC all the way from the Dome to Castle Rock and beyond...just last week a guide had his gear taken from his car at Nip and Tuck. Lots of auto traffic in that canyon all day every day, esp. during summer months, and no doubt some b*stards driving around are always on the lookout to make easy thefts. Best to not leave unattended gear and belongings in plain sight in your ride, if in there at all, and lock up.
For that matter, hiking and climbing trailheads thruout Boulder County and the front range are rife with reports of thefts from vehicles, so follow the same advice and don't leave stuff in the car.

I got hit about 12 years ago. Taken we're cash, sunglasses, and my aaa card. Sherif pointed out that phish was in town and aaa gives the holder car towing and motel discounts... Said it was a pattern that was noted.
Could happen anywhere, but where lots of cars are parked for a while with no attendance...

Anyway, never leave jack in a center compartment or glove box... Put it up under a seat or under a floor mat, where it would have to be searched for...

Shit. I was parked there at the same time. And my entire rack was in an unlocked compartment. Guess I got lucky.

We had a rash of break-ins at the ice climbing spots up here (NY) last winter. An idea that seemed to deter the thief was to leave the car unlocked (and emptied, of course) with signs visible inside saying "CAR IS UNLOCKED. NO VALUABLES INSIDE".

Sounds like there was another break-in. Bob Culps gear was taken from the Nip/Tuck parking area as reported on SuperTopo by Philo.

This is nutty. I've been up in the canyon about 10 of the last 14 days and havent seen anything weird or had any issues. Making me think a lot more about where we park ad what we leave in there!

It also sounds as if BC may have just left his gear and it was not stolen. At least that's what's being reported on the ST thread.

Why? Are you looking to hit my unlocked compartment? And if you steal my gear, will you return it to "our" x's place?

If I steal your gear, I'll keep it, of course.
BTW - if that seemed strange, I had no idea whiteasaghost was your X, I thought it was current at the time.

not bad. Better would be skip the Sport Chalet license holder and the collection of climbing stickers that scream "steal my stuff".

I once parked in BoCan and half way up a climb realized we'd left a pair of Rockies tickets on the dash without locking the car.
We rapped off and rushed back to the car, fearing the worst could happen. And sure enough, when we arrived we were horrified to see that someone had left a second set of tickets!
